He did I think and needed reconstructive surgery on his face after a crash/injury during the war. Could you imagine the likes of Tom Cruise having a decent boxing career btw? :lol:

Hugh McIlvaney mentioned it in the tribute he paid to him in the Sunday Times this week. Not straight from the horses mouth though. Although he did meet him once.

Both the Times and Indie say it was PR stunt in their Obits................... quoting the man himself

Fair do's, seems like one of those things that is attributed to someone but never happened. Just saying that's where I heard it. Canny interesting character regardless. There's a class photo of his face I have of him in either The Photograph Book or the book that compiled photos from different 'Time' photographers that was taken in his heyday. Looked the part (and was the part), you might say.
