luckyluke 2
Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder is backing Antoine Sibierski to return to Manchester City on Saturday and answer his critics in the best possible way. The 32-year-old Frenchman's arrival at St James' Park during the final hours of the summer transfer window was greeted with little glee on Tyneside, although that was in stark contrast to the emotions of his detractors in the north-west. However, three vital goals - his UEFA Cup strikes against Levadia Tallinn and Fenerbahce and his opener in the Carling Cup clash with Watford in midweek - have seen him fully justify Roeder's swoop. With Michael Owen out for the season and Shola Ameobi soon to join him when he finally undergoes hip surgery, Sibierski could have a vital and extended role to play this season, and his manager could hardly be more delighted with his contribution to date. Roeder said: "Antoine is a key member, if not the key member, of our squad at this moment. "He gives us height and power in the air at both ends of the field, and he has already paid for himself. "The people who rubbished his signing will probably feel a little bit stupid now. "And with the situation with Shola Ameobi, it is vital for us that Sibierski stays fit for the next couple of months. "Apart from his prowess in the air and his ability to play some good football, he has a terrific deft touch and also an eye for goal. "Off the field, he is a very intelligent and unassuming young man, and there is nothing you can dislike about him." Roeder would like nothing better than to see the former Lens midfielder add to his tally at Eastlands, where he spent three seasons, as the Magpies attempt to take their cup form into a faltering league campaign. Last weekend's 1-0 home defeat by Sheffield United left them sitting 19th in the table, better off than basement boys Charlton only on goal difference. Their last Premiership win - and one of only two to date - came at West Ham on September 17, and that is a statistic which must be addressed as a matter of urgency if they are to drag themselves out of trouble. City, of course, ultimately accounted for Roeder's predecessor Graeme Souness last season when a 3-0 victory for the home side proved the final straw for chairman Freddy Shepherd. Nolberto Solano was a substitute that night, and knows his side cannot afford a repeat. But he is confident if they can demonstrate the unity they showed at Watford to drag themselves back into and then win a cup-tie which they hope will provide a springboard, they will bounce back. Solano said: "We showed how important it was to stick together at Watford, and that is the only way we can be from now until the end of the season. "This is going to be a long season and at the moment, we are not doing well. "We have to be much better in the Premier League - second bottom is nowhere near good enough. "I know nobody here at Newcastle is happy to be where we are. But we are looking to try the best we can to improve our dreadful position. "Luckily, everyone is pulling together, and we hope that perhaps we have got our bad patch out of the way early rather than in the middle or later in the season." THREE goals he's scored. And none in the league. Yes, he truly has been out of this world. Tosser.
Brock Manson 0
Whether he's scoring or not, he's a squad player Glenn. The fact he's now a "key member" of the squad shows how far we've disintergrated as a club.
Baggio 0
He's only made 1 start in the league, bit harsh to judge his goalscoring on that.
luckyluke 2
He's only made 1 start in the league, bit harsh to judge his goalscoring on that. Maybe, but if that's the case he's hardly been a success has he?

Maybe, but if that's the case he's hardly been a success has he? That depends what your expectations of him were beforehand, I thought he was absolute shite at City but he's proved me wrong with some decent performances, he's not going to win player of the year or anything but he's come in and done a job when called upon. MattM4 0
He has always been a decent premiership player. Was glad when we signed him because thought we were getting a good quality squad player. All the hooha at the time we signed was more about the fact that he was the only one to be brought in.
Jimbo 175
http://mancityfans.net/news/?p=59 has Glenn Roeder gone mad ? Glenn Roeder has today been quoted as saying : “Antoine is a key member, if not the key member, of our squad at this moment, He gives us height and power in the air at both ends of the field, and he has already paid for himself. Apart from his prowess in the air and his ability to play some good football, he has a terrific deft touch and also an eye for goal. Mr Roeder must be relying on Antoine on Saturday to win them the game being a “key man” and all, well he must be very much mistaken, the man with the “prowess in the air” will be up against Richard Dunne, one of the best players at defending aerial balls in the league. i am sorry but if Sibierski who probably cost less than half a million and who was a mid table teams reject is your key man when you are 19th in the league then surely there must be something wrong ! Fair point. But 'the key member of our squad'? And I certainly do not 'feel silly' after expressing reservations about signing him.

I hate city fans in general but that's fair enough. The main reason Sibierski is here is because of Willie McKay - end of.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your key man being a midtabled team reject and being 19th in the league. To me that makes perfect sense. Guest Patrokles
It's not a huge intuitive leap to believe that Roeder- having 1 fit striker (and a slightly built one, at that) going into a game at the weekend against Sibierski's former club- is more likely to build up Sibierski's confidence, rather than come out and say he's just alright. Right?

ewerk 32486
Sibierski is not a player of the standard we want, then again neither are most of our squad. Such a bunch of overpaid, over-rated (by someone in the club) bunch of misfits I have ever seen.

sweetleftpeg 0
In the main he's been pretty painful to watch in the air like, for a big bloke he's poor up there. The header against Watford is the best thing I've seen him do with his heed. Saying that, I like him. He works his arse off and at least he's willing to mix it up. But he's still not very good tbh.
