Roeder was always confident

Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder insists he never thought his side would lose their Carling Cup tie at Watford.

 

The Magpies eventually triumphed at Vicarage Road after a penalty shoot-out, but were on the verge of exiting the competition after going down 2-1 in extra time.

 

The visitors were indebted to Scott Parker's leveller four minutes from the final whistle, but Roeder claims he was always confident his side would triumph one way or another.

 

The victory went some way to alleviating the pressure which had been heaped on the former Watford man following a 1-0 defeat at home to Sheffield United.

 

"I didn't feel like a condemned man at 2-1 down, not at all. It never even crossed my mind because the final whistle had not gone," said Roeder.

 

"It only takes a second to score a goal. There were four minutes left and we were on the up and what Scotty Parker did, he was capable of doing.

 

"Yes, we ran it close to the wire, but in the end, we got what we deserved by going on to win the game on penalties."
