We now need one more wicket to regain the Ashes. England held the Ashes for 15 months, the shortest period that someone has ever held the Ashes for.

Gerraint Jones, hilarious run out. Goes forward then down for a sweep off Warne, hits him in the groin, appeal for LBW but he is still out his crease and Ponting throws the stumps down so he is run out instead. The lads didnt know who to appeal to or where to run, was quite amusing.

The useless chipmunk faced convict should never play for us again.

Quoted for truth. England continue to pick non specialists cos they can do a bit of everything and get creamed again.

As I said above, Fletcher's obsession with bits and pieces players is costing us.

There was a nice concise text sent to SSN to sum it all up:

Wrong spinner, wrong keeper, wrong captain!

Might be a bit harsh on Freddie tbf but i think having to be all rounder/matchwinner etc. and be captain may be asking alot of anybody so he may benefit from the return of Vaughan.

They could also have added wrong preperation and wrong fast bowler (as Anderson had barely played any cricket yet was thrown in there as well)

Boycott was spot on this morning, saying that England were too obsessed with playing as many as the 2005 Ashes team as possible desipte them being half fit/out of form/crap. The Aussies are the best in the world because the selectors are pretty ruthless and if someone is better than you then it's 'thanks a lot, but bye'. The closest England have got to that was dropping Geraint Jones, but then we fucking brought him back anyway.

Agree with that. When they finally dropped Jones you thought maybe they were moving in the right direction, but no, of course they weren't. Reed did everything they asked of him to get a recall and in the tiny little chance they gave him did more than enough to keep his place but got shat on by Fletcher et al.

Picking a fully fit and in form Giles (and i'm actually a fan of the old King of spain!) ahead of Monty would be a mistake, but to pick him when he'd barely played in a year was a joke. Throw in Anderson with hardly any cricket and it isn't surprising we struggled to bowl them out twice when Harmison was also out of form (though i would have kept with him as they did).

I think it's more of a case of if someone is about as good as you or even slightly less talented, but comes from New South Wales, then it's "thanks a lot, bye".

For instance, the only reason Stuart McGill (who is shit, incidently) was considered a replacement for Shane Warne was because he was from NSW. Brad Hodge has been the best batsman at state level for years but has barely had a chance in the Test team. Why? He's Victorian.

Although will Merv Hughes on the selection panel the bias may shift slightly in the future.

the convicts were always favourites but we shot ourselves in the foot with our selection policy.

the negative approach set the tone for the whole series and despite some decent individual performances, we never dominated for more than a couple of sessions at a time.

geraint jones and giles shouldn't play test cricket again and flintoff should give up the captaincy and conentrate on his own game.

we missed simon jones but playing jimmy anderson was just silly. he looked every inch a man who hadn't played much cricket all year.

I think they vastly overrated the effect of the crowd would have on Panesar and Read, especially the former.

I agree, but even if they did think the crowd would be a problem, what is their plan, only allow our best spinner to play home tests and a few away tests where the crowd have promised to be really nice to him!!!

I never doubted for a minute he'd cope with anything the crowd may have (but didn't) dish out, and even if i had a tiny doubt i would have chucked him in and said show me what you can do.

Shane Warne is expected to announce his retirement from international cricket after the last Ashes Test, according to reports in Australia.

Warne, 37, is one wicket away from becoming the first bowler in Test history to claim 700 wickets, with the fourth Test starting on 26 December.

However, he said in a newspaper column on Wednesday he had no plans to quit.

"I am not thinking about that at the moment. I am enjoying my cricket and we'll see how it pans out," he wrote.

The spinner, named one of Wisden's five cricketers of the century in 2000, could begin a career in the media.

Our chances for 2009 are looking up!

One of the all time greats, probably the best wrist spinner of all time. The game will be a poorer place without him.

There is a bloke called SCG MacGill, i hear he can bowl a bit....

Will be sad to see Warne and McGrath go at the end of the Ashes but Warney has said that if it is too much of a strain with his kids then he would retire.

McGrath on the other hands is probably about time. His wife is ill still (i think) and it would be a nice send off for him at the SCG.

2 all time greats, gone like that.

But im still clutching straws until i hear it from their mouths :icon_lol:

Is there stories going that Glenn McGrath will retire too wellsy? Or is that speculation on your part about what's been happening off the field to him? I can see where you're coming from, and it would be a real shame for not just Australia, but cricket in general. One of the highlights for me of the last Ashes, despite the fact that I wanted England to win, was watching Shane Warne bowl. I've watched him bowl for 10 years, and if I could, I'd watch him for another 10. Incredible to watch. McGrath is the master too. Despite the fact that Warne and McGrath are key to Australia being the number 1 side in the world, I'd be sad to see either of them go after this series.

Stuart MacGill wouldn't be a bad replacement at all though.

MacGill must be getting on bit as well shirley?

(and he's nowhere near as good as Warne, but that goes without saying!)

I'd say he's at least 32. And aye he's not as good as Warne, but still, there's no shame in that!

Better record than Warne in Australia, although that could have changed recently.
