Star Held Over Assault Updated: 10:12, Tuesday November 07, 2006 Bolton Wanderers striker El-Hadji Diouf has been arrested over allegations he beat up his wife. The Senegal international was held by police following reports of an assault at the couple's home in the early hours of Sunday morning. It was reported his wife Valerie called the police after suffering a cut lip. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called to an address in Bolton at 6.45am on November 5 following reports of an assault. "Officers arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of committing assault. "He has since been bailed pending further inquiries to appear at a police station tomorrow." Diouf, 25, started playing in the Premiership in 2002 when Liverpool signed him from French club Lens for £10m. He was loaned to Premiership rivals Bolton in 2004 and joined Wanderers on a permanent basis the following year for an undisclosed fee. Diouf scored the club's first ever goal in a European competition in a 2-1 victory over Lokomtiv Plovdiv in the UEFA Cup, although he has often made headlines for his disciplinary lapses on the field. A spokeswoman for Bolton Wanderers declined to comment on the arrest.
