PUB GRUB

The Crows Nest at the Haymarket does cracking burgers and Steak and Ale pies. However its always busy and always full of Rahs from Newcastle Uni.

The burgers used to be really nice when it was Bar Oz. I once nearly died in there. I was eating a burger and I took a too-big-for-my-gob bite. Anyway, I couldn't chew it properly so I decided to just swallow it. The next thing I know it gets stuck halfway down and completely blocks my windpipe. It just wouldn't shift and I was sat there completely unable to breathe. I just kept trying to swallow over and over again, and gradually it worked its way down and I could breathe again. It was stuck for a while though and I honestly thought that was the finish.

I've mentioned this on here before but it was Christmas Eve and I remember thinking "Fuck I'm gonna die on Christmas Eve. I'm gonna ruin Christmas." :D

I LOVE steak and ale pies from pubs an'all.

Btw, Renton you mincer, this thread is about PUB GRUB, i.e. cheap and cheerful stuff to fill your belly. What are you doing reading a Michelin guide you complete faggot!

Sorry for liking proper food made by chefs rather than shit that comes from a microwave like. As long as plebs like you are happy eating offal burgers with lard wedges I guess there will be no market for decent food though.

Btw, I'm not a fan of noveau cuisine in particular, but I do prefer good, home-made food, and that is hard to come by in this region compared to others - that's my point. And the ones that do do decent food are packed out due to their scarcity.

I have to agree with resident faggot Renton on this one. Gastro pubs are hard to beat (and even harder to find). One in Mcr closed down recently 'The Bridge' and its a big loss. Yeah the food was a bit dearer but proportionately it was still cheaper than a restaurant, while also being a considerably better standard than many. The big attraction for me though wasn't the price etc but the fact you could have a proper pint or two with your meal-lock and load!

I like nice 'gastro pubs' too as I prefer the more relaxed atmosphere compared to a posh restaurant. I've noticed a canny few places over (in Belfast) here do good food that's often made with fresh local produce.

This thread is turning into a bit social commentary tbh.

Gastro pubs-catering for the more discerning members who seem to be clear about the things that matter-ie the food, without needing the pretence of a restaurant setting.

Lloyds pubs-catering for the £3.99 burgers and packet mash brigade-Those who are just about how much you get on your plate regardless of the quality as they'll generally be eating the stuff while staff are administering the heimlich manouvre-aka Gemmill.

I hate the Lloyd's bar in the Gate. And the rest of the Gate for that matter. Still, it keeps the people who like those places out of the places I like going to. Snob-tastic.

EDIT:  @ Sammy

Wacky's Nandos testimonial on page 1 bears out your 'containment' theory nicely for me.

So this Lloyds is a bit of a containment area, then? I get the drift.

"Yo, bro, whatchabaht?"

"Yo, bro, man, just back fro the 'tto"

"T'ghetto, bro? Ya mean Chappel Park? ( :D )"

"Nar, bro, Lloyds at the Gate, man, bro, man 'ting, man"

Lord knows what size portion is too big for the Gemmill's gargantuan gob!

The mind boggles.

*is off to google images to have a scout for Desperate Dan cow pie pic*

Can anyone imagine the air rage on Gemmill later when the stewardess gives him one of those diddy in flight meals?

Gemmill will be in the air in 20 minutes time. It really makes your mind boggle at the miracle of flight.

what have I missed? has fatlad gone away somewhere?

Why wasnt I informed of this?

So many possibilities for customs related tomfoolery have gone sadly amiss.

The Oak in Quorn (near Loughborough) does amazing food and the staff are top rate, not too expensive.

I suppose you could describe it as a Gastro Pub.

Guest Patrokles

Gloucestershire abounds with fancy pubs. Lots of riverside country pubs, then towns like Cheltenham & even the smaller village-type places with a wide range of gastro pubs. I eat out regularly. Given the choice between £30 on an evening in a nice pub with friends, or £30 getting hammered/going clubbing, I know which I'd choose.

Feeling slightly.. isolated maybe.. but if any of you ever end up this way the steak and chips from The Sportsman is excellent... runs about £6 for that and a drink. Good food, good beer/ales on tap, darts and pool and dead cheap for the area.
