MattM4 0
Heard about this before the game ... but why did they do it exactly? Seems a bit random, it wasn't the anniversary of his death or anything.

manc-mag 1
Did it happen recently like? As has been said before, if it wasnt the anniversary of his death and there was no other nexus with Celtic, then why were they doing it? Don't get me wrong, obviously I'd rather see fans uniting than having a go at each other and in that sense it's a nice touch, but I dont half get the impression Celtic fans have an overblown opinion of themselves as the greatest in the game. manc-mag 1
Aside from the bigotry there aren't many better supporters than the Celtic lot. Well theres lots of them if thats what you mean. But then they are from the only big city in Scotland so there should be. And then they have shared the full compliment of domestic trophies with only one other club for pretty much their entire history so they're pretty much guaranteed success. And that other club is the focus of their bigotry (and vice versa). So, nah tbh. You can shove that theory up your arse.
ewerk 31205
Not too fond of the Celts then manc-mag? Did you have a bad experience with one of them as a kid? Its not the numbers but the craic and the way they behave that makes them good fans IMO, its only a few years since they got a special award from FIFA for their behaviour in Seville for the UEFA Cup final and it seems that they have a good time with opposing fans wherever they go in Europe. manc-mag 1
I think the problem is not that theyre constantly being told theyre the best fans (as often happens) but that they genuinely believe they're the best fans. I think Celtic fans are pretty much the worst fans for accepting any kind of criticism of their club. Just above Man Utd fans. And that to me is up there with the worst of indictments! As for the craic..basically they love being told how good their club is. Just basically being flattered. Very similar behaviour to most Man ure fans. Oh and then theres the bigotry. I've not had any bad experiences btw, just telling it like I see it.
manc-mag 1
In essence I have a lot of respect for fans who can laugh at themselves, who understand gallows humour and who don't constantly want you to accept theyre the 'best fans in the game'. I hold any fans who display these qualities in high esteem and have no affinity with those who are the opposite. It's not an anti Celtic thing btw. It's an anti superiority complex thing. Oh and then theres the bigotry.
ewerk 31205
I don't agree with your comment on not accepting criticism of their club, perhaps we've had different experiences wth Celtic fans but I've found that Celtic fans are the first to criticise their own club and their board especially. I think you have to look at the bigotry in context of the political situation of Ireland where a large part of their fanbase is from, its about more than football and is certainly unique to Britain. If you take the religious/political aspect out of it then its not that different to major city rivalries in England and other countries but the fact that it is about politics/religion means that it may seem strange to people such as yourself who I presume haven't been exposed to that problem on a daily basis as many of the Old Firm fans have. Isegrim 9905
I agree about the bigotry, but the thing is whenever those thousands of Celtic fans are on travel they always leave the place with the locals full of praise for them. There is never any hassle. I experienced it myself in Stuttgart and Munich in the last couple of years. They gather together on the main square and literally drink the shops dry. But the drunkeness does not turn into violence. Strangely that cannot be said about all other fans from the British Island that visited those cities in the last couple of years. Thats it though, they can criticise their club but nobody else can. You're making my point for me to be honest. I'll not get too heavily into it as I assume your allegiances are Irish/Catholic/Celtic etc etc. I'm not saying that has ruined your judgement because that would be very presumptuous of me but I'll bet it colours it to a degree and I think your defence of the bigotry thing is a bit apologist tbh. I dont have any allegiances one way or another (I think more or less exactly the same about Rangers just for the record)

It's probably not best to use hooliganism records as a measure as there again on average you'll find that low and behold things balance out and leave them on a par with other 'ordinary' fans. If you discount the bigotry and sectarian violence that is...otherwise that leaves them looking considerably worse.
ewerk 31205
Yes I am Irish/Catholic but I couldn't give a fuck about the SPL but I'll admit I do like to see Celtic do well in Europe, I guess I'm just a product of my environment. That doesn't mean I'm comepletely pro-Celtic and everything I say regarding bigotry goes for Rangers too, they're simply the other side of the coin. I don't like to see religious bigotry in any shape or form in football, all I'm saying is that I can see and understand why it has become part of the Old Firm rivalry. And I have found that I can criticise Celtic but as I said most of their fans agree with me but each to their own opinion I suppose.
