Cold sores are caused by the same virus as causes some types of genital herpes - HSV-1. About 50% of the population harbour it, once you have been infected you can't get rid of it sadly. Most the time it will lie dormant in the nerve cells around your lips, but will typically become reactivated by extremes of temperature, stress, and trauma (so I guess aftershave could activate it). Aciclovir might help symptoms a bit, but won't get rid of it. Btw, never give oral sex with a cold sore as there is a chance you could give your partner genital herpes. It is also theoretically possible to "autoinoculate" yourself and give yourself genital herpes so Jimbo should take note.
