Guest Patrokles
I have scoured long and hard to find deep and meaningful metal lyrics. I have come up with: Something takes a part of me. Something lost and never seen. Everytime I start to believe, Something's raped and taken from me... from me. Life's got to always be messing with me. (You wanna see the light) Can't they chill and let me be free? (So do I) Can't I take away all this pain. (You wanna see the light) I try to every night, all in vain... in vain. Sometimes I cannot take this place. Sometimes it's my life I can't taste. Sometimes I cannot feel my face. You'll never see me fall from grace Something takes a part of me. You and I were meant to be. A cheap fuck for me to lay Something takes a part of me. & Once again waiting for the darkness, beat up spun and scarred. Prepare for another war. Day by day we decay. Sunlight, get out of my way. Dig up yourself from your grave. Bad to the bone, raised in the gutter, Not exactly a muthafucking role model. To you looking down on me. FUCK YOU BITCH! Ain't got time for the future or the past. Live for the moment, make it last. & Devil cracked the earthly shell Foretold she was the one Blew hope into the room and said: "You have to live before you die young" Holding her down Channeling darkness Hemlock for the Gods Fading resistance Draining the weakness Penetrating inner light & I can't remember anything Can't tell if this is true or dream Deep down inside I feel to scream This terrible silence stops me Now that the war is through with me I'm waking up, I cannot see That there is not much left of me Nothing is real but pain now Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, wake me Back in the womb it's much too real & Hearing music from the deepest forest Songs as a seduction of sirens The elf-folk is calling me. Tapio, Bearking, Ruler of the forest Mielikki, Bluecloak, Healer of the ill and sad Open the gate and let me follow the uncarven path. THE WAY TO THE LANDS WHERE AS HERO I STAND THE PATH WHERE BEAUTY MET THE BEAST ELVENPATH IT’S THE HONESTY OF THESE WORLDS RULED BY MAGIC AND MIGHTY SWORDS THAT MAKES MY SOUL LONG FOR THE PAST ELVENPATH The moonwitch took me to a ride on a broomstick Introduced me to her old friend Home Gnome Told me to keep the sauna warm for him. At the grove I met the rest-the folk of my fantasies Bilbo, Sparhawk, goblins and pixies, Snowman, Willow, trolls and the seven dwarfs The path goes forever on. (I have to confess that I love Nightwish, though) & The coffin is sealed on your rotten corpse You lie in darkness, death corrodes your face You are rotting, maggots in your coffin Worms in your head - Soon they'll be dead Nothing to feed on in your empty skull Hell is where you are, your tortured sould is scarred For years you'll rot in pain, lonely and decayed You are rotting, maggots in your coffin I could go on, but it's getting demoralising. Ted Maul 0
On a different matter, could we see some of your favourite lyrics please. Since I pretty much agree with Patrokles I hoy some of my lyrics into the fold aswell... In my rear view mirror the sun is going down Sinking behind bridges in the road And I think of all the good things That we have left undone And I suffer premonitions Confirmed suspicions Of the holocaust to come The rusty wire that holds the cork That keeps the anger in Gives way and suddenly it's day again The sun is in the east Even though the day is done Two suns in the sunset Could be the human race is run & I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again & Are these the people that we should bomb Are we so sure they mean us harm Is this our pleasure, punishment or crime Is this a mountain that we really want to climb The road is hard, hard and long Put down that two by four This man would never turn you from his door Oh George! Oh George! That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small When I was 17 my mother, bless her heart, fulfilled my summer dream She handed me the keys to the car We motored down to Paris, fuelled with Dexedrine and booze Got bust in Antibes by the cops And fleeced in Naples by the wops But everyone was kind to us, we were the English dudes Our dads had helped them win the war When we all knew what we were fighting for But now an Englishman abroad is just a US stooge The bulldog is a poodle snapping round the scoundrel's last refuge Is gentleness too much for us Should gentleness be filed along with empathy We feel for someone else's child Every time a smart bomb does its sums and gets it wrong Someone else's child dies and equities in defence rise America, America, please hear us when we call You got hip-hop, be-bop, hustle and bustle You got Atticus Finch You got Jane Russell You got freedom of speech You got great beaches, wildernesses and malls Don't let the might, the Christian right, fuck it all up For you and the rest of the world Not in my name, Tony, you great war leader you Terror is still terror, whosoever gets to frame the rules History's not written by the vanquished or the damned Now we are Genghis Khan, Lucretia Borghia, Son of Sam In 1961 they took this child into their home I wonder what became of them In the cauldron that was Lebanon If I could find them now, could I make amends? How does the story end?

Toonraider 0
In my hour of need Ha, no you're not there And though i reached out for you Wouldn't lend a hand. Through the darkest hour Grace did not shine on me It feels so cold, very cold No one cares for me. Did you ever think i get lonely Did you ever think that i needed love Did you ever think to stop thinking You're the only one that i'm thinking of. You'll never know how hard i tried To find my space and satisfy you too. Things will be better when i'm dead and gone Don't try to understand, knowing you i'm probably wrong. But oh how i lived my life for you Still you'd turn away Now as i die for you My flesh still crawls as i breathe your name All these years i thought i was wrong Now i know it was you Raise you head, raise your face your eyes Tell me who you think you are, who? I walk, i walk alone Into the promised land. There's a better place for me But it's far, far away Everlasting life for me In a perfect world But i gotta die first, Please god send me on my way. Time has a way of taking time Loneliness is not only felt be fools Alone i call to ease the pain Yearning to be held by you, alone so alone, i'm lost Consumed by the pain The pain, the pain, the pain. Won't you hold me again You just laughed, ha ha, bitch My whole life is work built on the past But the time has come when all things shall pass This good thing passed away. Megadeth-In my darkest hour. Ive always liked these lyrics...probably because they were sung with so much venom by Dave Mustaine!!

Ted Maul 0
I closed my eyes, drew back the curtain To see for certain what I thought I knew Far far away, someone was weeping But the world was sleeping Any dream will do I wore my coat, with golden lining Bright colours shining, wonderful and new And in the east, the dawn was breaking And the world was waking Any dream will do A crash of drums, a flash of light My golden coat flew out of sight The colours faded into darkness I was left alone May I return to the beginning The light is dimming, and the dream is too The world and I, we are still waiting Still hesitating Any dream will do A crash of drums, a flash of light My golden coat flew out of sight The colours faded into darkness I was left alone May I return to the beginning The light is dimming, and the dream is too The world and I, we are still waiting Still hesitating Any dream will do

TheInspiration 1
I was raised from a broken seed, I grew up to be and unwanted weed. Ever faster the time exceeds me, little harder again to remember...you. Held a torch for you, when lightning stroke me, once again, hope I died for the last time. Only one I have a thing greater than you, little light on the sky every night. Morning dew on the field, where I met you. I was frozen a year, couldn't get through. Got a sign, not a scar, on my shoulder, I am not quite the man you take me for... Fell in love with the weakness within me. Tried to force me the Ring and own me. Guess you found what you'd think would oblige me, little version of me to consume you... I'd give my everything to you, follow you thru the garden of oblivion. If only I could tell you everything, the little things you'll never dare to ask me... Do you really know me? I might be a God. Show me that you care and have a cry. How do you see me?... as the one? Can you see my blood when I'm bleeding. How can you love this exile, and how could I desire you. When my pain is my pain and your is too... On this deadwinter's night. Darkness becomes this child. Bless this night with a tear. For I have none I fear... Seven lifes of a man, passed before me. Seven graves, one for every love I've had. Only once I have broken my so called heart. Only one made me see why they cry. Will I learn how to be one of you someday? Will I still feel the eyes that behold me. Will I hear what you think, when you see me? Will it tear me apart if you feel for me... I 'd give my everything to you, follow you thru the garden of oblivion. Little broken , always been, a part of you belongs to me. You were never mine to love, but this all has made it easy for me... Burning feathers, not an angel, Heaven's closed , Hell's sold out. So I walk on the earth, behind the curtains, hidden from everyone, until I find a new life to ruin again On this deadwinter's night. Darkness becomes this child. Bless this night with a tear. For I have none I fear... On this deadwinter's night. Darkness becomes this child. Bless this night with a tear. For I have none I fear... Well, sure, it's a matter of opinion, but there are bands I listen to and love who I'd never claim were brilliant lyrically. I'm still able to be impartial in my judgement there. But I do also think that lyrics almost NEVER read as well on page as they do when you actually hear them, so that might be a big issue with some of these. Guest Patrokles
Obviously, not all of my favourite lyrics parse brilliantly on the page, and some of them aren't even amazingly good; perhaps they're just simple or relevent to me or a particular moment in my life. Broken World, by the Black Heart Procession, for example, when heard, is nigh-on perfect, but the lyrics written out would seem rather simple. Same goes for Will Oldham's 'I see a Darkness' or Michael Hurley's 'Blue Mountain.' So I'll exclude those. Those lyrics I appreciate for numerous reasons, the lyrical value being one of them, follow. Black But Comely by Baby Dee is an incredibly moving song and the lyrics strongly reference the Song of Solomon, whilst still clearly being a Baby Dee song. Very hard song to track down though. Joanna Newsom is a very interesting lyric-writer. All of Jason Molina's work is lyrically very good. Of his Songs: Ohia stuff, Farewell Transmission is great, as is the whole Lioness album. Ring the Bell is great. Just Be Simple starts brilliantly with: 'You'll never hear me talk about/ some day getting out-/ Why put a new address/ on the same old loneliness?' The Hold Steady & Mountain Goats are both terrific lyrically, often by virtue of their storytelling. The Hold Steady are the more immediately quotable of the two, and Craig Finn's contempt for the scene is always enjoyable, eg: i was a twin cities trash bin. i did everything they'd give me. i'd jam it in my system. she had me cornered in the kitchen. i said i'll do anything but listen to some weird talking chick who just can't understand that we're hot soft spots on a hard rock planet. baby take off your beret. The Mountain Goats' song, 'Fall Of the High School Running Back': Sophomore year You rushed for an average Of 8 1/3 yards per carry All eyes were on you Junior year You blew your knee out At an out-of-town game Nowhere to go but Down, down, down Nothing but the ground for you to fall to By July You’d made a whole bunch of new friends People you used to look down on And you’d figured out A way to make real money Giving Ns to your friends And it felt stupendous: Chrome spokes on your Japanese bike But selling acid was a bad idea And selling it to a cop was a worse one And new laws said that 17-year-olds could do federal time You were the first one No Children is also great, but best heard sung. (same applies to all of these songs, really). Then from various other bands and in no particular order: She's got cheekbones like geometry & eyes like sin & she's sexually enlightened by cosmopolitan Crying in the cab ride home With Frank Sinatra on the radio but it might as well have been li'l Kim when every song you hear still reminds you of him. & I lit a thin green candle, to make you jealous of me. But the room just filled up with mosquitos, they heard that my body was free. Then I took the dust of a long sleepless night and I put it in your little shoe. And then I confess that I tortured the dress that you wore for the world to look through. I showed my heart to the doctor: he said I just have to quit. Then he wrote himself a prescription, and your name was mentioned in it! Then he locked himself in a library shelf with the details of our honeymoon, and I hear from the nurse that he's gotten much worse and his practice is all in a ruin. I heard of a saint who had loved you, so I studied all night in his school. He taught that the duty of lovers is to tarnish the golden rule. And just when I was sure that his teachings were pure he drowned himself in the pool. His body is gone but back here on the lawn his spirit continues to drool. & The last thing I need is part twelve of the row But just why are you being so reasonable now? & The last time I saw richard was detroit in 68, And he told me all romantics meet the same fate someday Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark cafe & If love is a bolt from the blue, then what is that bolt but a glorified screw? and that doesn't hold nothing together & I am angry, I am ill & I'm as ugly as sin My irritability keeps me alive and kickin' & I'm sorry to bother you But I'm afraid I want your attention; You see, I've come to realise something that I think I should mention- Through no fault of my own I'm in a sticky situation I'm suffering the consequences of a bad education. & There was a flood, a world of water The mason’s wife swam for her daughter 1000 people did what they could they felled a steeple and tore up the wood 500 pieces means 500 float 1000 people means 500 don’t & Jilted John's True Love Stories is a terrific concept album about being a teenager. Baz's part contains many gems, such as John being told by a girl: 'Listen you'd better not go too far- & Stop trying to undo my bra' & I still hear your voice at night When I turn out the light And try to settle down But there's nothing much I can do Because I can't live without you Any way at all (That's from Close Watch by John Cale and really needs to be heard to appreciate fully how sad it is). & The Lucksmiths are always good for a pithy quote or too, such as: Like a self-help manual that's been written in braille it seems the more we touch, the more we learn about our failings. & Meaningless? You mean it's all been meaningless? Every whisper and caress? Yes yes yes it was totally meaningless Meaningless like when two fireflies flouresce Just like everything I guess Less less yes, it was utterly meaningless Even less a little glimpse of nothingness sucking meaning from the rest of this mess Yes yes yes it was thoroughly meaningless and if some dim bulb should say we were in love in some way kick all his teeth in for me and if you feel like keeping on kicking, feel free Meaningless Who dare say it wasn't meaningless? Shout from the rooftops and address the press Ha ha ha, it was totally meaningless Meaningless Meaning less than a game of chess Just like your mother said and mother knows best I knew it all the time but now I confess Yes yes yes how deliciously meaningless Yes yes yes effervescently meaningless Yes yes yes it was beautifully meaningless Yes yes yes it was profoundly meaningless Yes yes yes definatively meaningless Yes yes yes comprehensively meaningless Yes yes yes magnificently meaningless Yes yes yes how incredibly meaningless Yes yes yes unprecedentedly meaningless Yes yes yes how mind-blowingly meaningless Yes yes yes how unbelievably meaningless Yes yes yes how infinitely meaningless & Nobody gets a record deal, you gotta take that shit Treat the record label like a slut, then rape that bitch! & I wore my fringe like Roger McGuinn's! & I'm fond of a song by Parenthetical Girls called 'The Weight She Fell Under' which is about someone getting cut in half by a train. It's really interesting to listen to. The lyrics are okay-ish on their own, though. But definitely worth hearing! & The ones who love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest And visit their graves on holidays at best The ones who love us least are the ones we'll die to please If it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand them I'm a bit knackered now and want to do something else.
