Jimbo 172
This really boils my piss, whilst I conceed that to "foriegners" an English accent represents England, to me an English accent (non regional) is neutral and in historical movies, unless its an American historical movie (oxy-moron ?) is as bad as a glaring continuity error, one example is in Gladiator, the head of the Pretorian guard, who's name excapes me, speaks in an American accent, in my mind he might as well be carrying an iPod as much as a sword ! I saw Film 2006 this week and they reviewed Marie Antoinette, staring Kirsten Dunst, who portrays the French Queen speaking with an American accent, this is simply wrongness in my opinion, this is almost as crazy as "Alexander" who's leading actors all sounded as if they had just stumbled off the set of Bally Kissangel ! Mad-on-the-cocks 0
Closer to home, why have Mancs playing a part in Bread as a Boswell, I mean, its a scouse family. Also Brookside, but what about that film with Mel Gibson,
Happy Face 29
My biggest problem with the films you list is that they're shit. The Last Temptation of Christ makes no attempt to contextualise the dialogue, but is excellent nevertheless.

So you're arguing that the ancient Romans being played by an Australian actor in an American film should speak with an English accent as it would be more historically accurate? Guest alex
I read somewhere once that Americans in the period in which Westerns are set wouldn't have had American accents back then. And I like Kirsten Dunst btw.

Not really; your argument states that it seems to you to be a continuity error. What would be the point of Dunst speaking with a french accent in this Marie Antoinette film? It's not more accurate for her to speak english in a french accent. If you're so concerned about film actors having english accents, then you should start making some (more) half-decent films in britain.
Happy Face 29
And I like Kirsten Dunst btw. Me too, but I've never seen her play anything other than Kirsten Dunst. She's got about as much range as Vinnie Jones.
Meenzer 15347
I was going to say, how did the American accent evolve and mutate so dramatically anyway? They've only existed for 60 years or something

And I like Kirsten Dunst btw. I do get annoyed when films taking place during the colonial period don't affect true accents; but in a film where the entire dialogue would have to be in another language the point seems lost to me. luckyluke 2
Kevin Costner as an American Robin Hood, the lazy twat! He tried an English accent but it was so bad the director told him not to bother. I'll forgive him as it's the best film ever made.
