Guest alex
The thing is, given his pedigree, sensible Rangers fans will probably want to give Le Guen a canny while to see if he'll get things right. Roeder on the other hand really needed to get off to a decent start (especially after the way the summer went) as only the blind optimists probably thought he was the man for the job. When's Shearer back from Down Under?

When's Shearer back from Down Under? Le guen won't get time. If he doesn't start winning soon he will get the boot. Both Rangers and Celtic but more so rangers. Think they have a divine right to be top of the SPL. Make most Man U fans seem quite level headed about it TBH.

David Kelly 1260
I've heard Shearer will be back at the club in the next couple of weeks as assistant. Don't know how good a source the is (certainly no Kris Akabusi) but it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Before I heard it I was saying that I fully expect to see him in the dugout in one form or another before the end of the season. While I don't see it as the right way forward he might at least be someone the players respect because I don't see them having any for the three monkeys (oops racist) that are in charge at the minute. No, certainly not. It's just that I've come to the conclusion that for as long as Shepherd and his cronies remain in charge, we're not going to get another top-class manager. Giving the job to Shearer - who would get plenty of support and time from the supporters as well as the club hierarchy - could well be the best thing we can hope for. Gemmill 46035
I have more faith in Shearer as a manager than Roeder tbh. He's a winner, he won't accept second best from anyone (if players don't perform, they won't play, which is how it should be), and there is no way he'd allow Shepherd to fob him off or take the piss in a transfer window if his name and reputation were on the line. I think he might bring some problems on himself with his character (yes, he was a good team player, but he's always struck me as a very selfish blokd. Not a good trait for a manager), but he talks very intelligently as a pundit. It's easy to put up with Roeder's calm, measured approach to everything when you're winning, but when you're losing he just comes across as a wet weekend and it's pretty annoying. When the team players like a bunch of fannies you have to wonder whether Roeder's character isn't rubbing off on them.

I said at the time last season don't underestimate the impact Shearer had behind the scenes during Roeder's honeymoon, looks like he may have done a bit more than people gave him credit for. Besides, at this stage, he may be our only option. The trouble is, if he has any sense, he will leave well alone.

Incidentally though, I don't agree that being selfish is as a manager is always a negative; it was in Souness but Fergie has the same type of ruthless streak I'd hope to see in Shearer. It's a bit more than a hunch though, isn't it? He's a winner, he's intelligent, and he's highly motivated. He could attract a lot of good international players with his reputation, and he won't take shit from Shepherd. Compare this to Roeder, who has shown himself to be a complete loser at avery club he has managed. Yes, his appointment would be a risk given his lack of experience, but it would be one worth taking imo. What clever alternatives can you suggest btw? Happy Face 29
We're already in the shit with the tax man, We're one of eight teams under investigation by the FA which could have serious repercussions, we've got no attack and no defense and can't buy for 3 months. Attractive prospect to the big managers. I've never been keen for Shearer to take charge, but at the moment if Shearer would come anywhere near us I'd beg him to lend a hand. Guest Patrokles
You know their names though, right? Sure, I can name a lot of good managers we could try for, but who knows whether they'd come or not? What if the takeover goes through, etc, etc. Villa were in a far worse position than us last year until the takeover hit full swing, then they got O'Neill. The club is still a reasonably attractive one, especially to any manager constrained at his current club by money, or even a lower league manager with plenty of success and potential, who would surely jump at the chance to manage in the Premiership. This is my entire point and why I can't name names; I am not in a position where I can contact managers or agents and ask whether they'd be interested. That's why I can't say who we have a remote possibility of getting, and also why I'm not going to reel off names only to be pooh-poohed by those on message boards who clearly know the inner workings of a football club.
