21st January 2006:

Newcastle lie 14th in the Premiership, having taken 26 points from their 22 league games, winning 7, losing 10 and drawing 5. Their goal difference is -5; their top scorer has 7 goals.

One match later and we'd sacked our manager.

Personally I think it's an intersting but not quite fair comparison. I don't think the performances have been anywhere near as consistently wretched as they'd gotten in the last months of the Souness era.

I think if you look at the start we had, and then compare it with the way we have played the last 6-7 games i think we could say we've improved. The biggest issue is with size of squad and lack of strength in depth. Im confident that we are doing enough to stay out of trouble and get back up the league. Once again, it only takes a couple of results and we'll be up to 7th. We just need to get over this wretched injury crisis (which happens every year).

Roeder's never been good enough imo and never will be. Although I would give Shepherd some credit for not sacking him a month or two back because I genuinely think we'd be in a worse state than we are now. Long-term though we have to be looking at someone of a higher calibre.

You can't argue with league position unfortunately. For the money's he's had, we are simply in an unacceptable position under Roeder. And without significant investment in players, I can't see our position improving as dramatically as some people seem to think it will.

I Agree. Roeder might get the excuse of the ridiculous injury list, but even that problem is partly self-made due to the poor handling of the summer transfer window ("planning":icon_lol:<_< ). The injury of Bramble might even do him a favour as it reduced not only the number of shocking defensive errors, but also cut down the long ball game by something like 70% (Given is still not cured from it). Still, a lot of the performances have been dreadful. Some close to the standard under Souness. As Renton says, the table doesn't lie. We deservedly dropped far too many points against avarage and poor teams like Sheffield, Charlton et al, so the current position is a fair reflection of our season so far and without a major turnaround during this transfer window I don't expect it to change until the end of the season, too.

Re performances and whether they were as bad as they were under Souness - I would say the home performances early on in the season against the likes of Charlton and Sheff Utd were worse than anything we saw under Souness. As crap as we were under Souness we never looked like such a pushover at home as we did in those games.

You love Souness though tbf

At least as bad as anything under Souness though, I agree.

Yes, but you were watching those matches through your rose-tinted specs, Souness bummer.

He's the bomb. :icon_lol: Seriously though, after those two games, that's when I genuinely thought there was a possibility of relegation this season. Twice in a couple of weeks the bottom side came to SJP and took points off us with barely a whimper from our lot and things looked pretty horrendous. They've got better, but I'm still not entirely convinced we've turned the corner. I think we're still in for a long few months.

Well, early this season, I'd have took 4th bottom like a shot if I'd been offered it. Don't think I ever felt that way under Souness, even though I hated the bloke. And while I think we're going to be ok (this season), I agree we aren't out of the woods yet.
