DOUBLE WHAMMY

Alright, two new interesting musical things today:

Firstly, as part of the Cheltenham Literature Festival, they're having free gigs every night this week. I went to Monday's to see Thomas Truax, who I'd never heard of before. I'd seen the blurb and he seemed quite interesting, so we gave it a go.

It was a really compelling show. The guy is someone that it's hard not to admire, in terms of his creativity. He makes his own instruments; one of which is a kind of victorian era acoustic drum machine, called Sister Spinster. It seems comprised of a pram wheel with protrusions. When this rotates, the sticky out bits hit a bell, cymbal, and little kick drum to make noises. It keeps perfect tempo.

Some of the songs were a bit iffy, but there was enough good stuff to make it a worthwhile watch, and Truax himself is gracious and interesting enough to make for a positive vibe. Some of the things he does are pretty clever- playing his guitar with a hand-fan to simulate the sound of a butterly (ish) on 'The Butterfly and the Entymologist,' for example.

This is Sister Spinster:

And this is what she sounds like:

These two are probably two of his best songs (especially Swappin' Spit):

Inside the Internet (very apt)

Swappin' Spit

I mention him especially because he's touring the UK until mid-december, and there are more dates to be added. Since he finished in Glasgow and there are no Newcastle shows planned as yet, it's entirely possible that there will be one added, so if you're around, check him out.

Second is a really great Australian band, every bit as good as the Go-Betweens and Lucksmiths. They are called Augie March. They write sad songs that don't necessarily sound sad. Which is a good thing, in my eyes.

There are some live versions of their songs on youtube:

The Night is a Blackbird

This Train Will be Taking No Passengers

You can listen to some more songs here:

(The Vineyard is possibly the best of the three there)

This was the lead single from their most recent album:

One Crowded Hour

Not porn, just something mildly interesting.

Can't we just have a sub forum for Patrokle's shit musical threads? <_<

How about one for every reply you ever make?

It's called the "ignore user" button. :)

Hopefully you can see the flaw in your argument there, given your near-obsession with deriding much of what I post as pointless.

I didn't say it was pointless, I'm sure someone, somewhere is interested, its just that there aren't too many of them on here and I hate wasting time opening your threads with a thin glimmer of hope that you may well actually posting something worthwhile. More fool me I suppose.

Now fuck off.
