Turning Point

So things haven't been that great for me for a while, perhaps explaining my occasional surliness and intolerance for EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH ME HERE. So sorry about that. But anyway, things have been getting steadily better and I feel the culmination of this came today.

I was walking into HMV (where I always work over Xmas), and dropped my fucking covering letter somewhere during the walk and couldn't find it. So I'm thinking 'motherfucking hell, everything continues to fuck up'. But I thought I'd go in and speak to the manager regardless, esp. since he hired me last year (though I didn't work with him).

So I get there, we go to his office to talk, and after a few minutes he asks if I'm after a full-time job, to which I reply 'yeah, sure.' (I need money for postgrad in America next year). He then leans back and begins:

'... i shouldn't really do this, but! I'm leaving HMV to go and manage the new Fopp store in town. Now, I'm not saying don't apply here, BUT, you know...'

So I went in looking for an Xmas temp. job at an average record store and now I'm basically full-time employed at a record store that's a ZILLION times better, and with a great boss, to boot. Additionally, he asked if I knew anyone else who could work there; so, essentially, it's just going to be me and my friends listening to music all day.

What's Fopp?

It's a smallish chain of record stores, but it's pretty much the closest I'd ever get to working in an independent place here, so I'm pretty excited. I wouldn't want to make a career out of it, but for a place to work for a year, it should be really nice.

Nice one. What's the craic with you then? Have you finished at uni and are just waiting for this postgrad? Assume you'll be studying in and around New Jersey?

I graduated last June and was going to go and do my postgrad in Elementary Education (primary school) over in Tennessee, but that fell through because I had a problem with my health that's basically left me stuck at home (I'm not close with my family, so it's hellish) whilst I wait for hospital appointments (I appreciate the NHS but the fucking waiting times are insane) (hence my INORDINATE amount of time online). But hopefully things are getting sorted out now, so I'm planning for the year ahead now and I'm more optimistic about stuff than I was. Yeah, the places I'm applying for this time around are around the Jersey area, but the one I hope to get is in New York, which means I'll get to live in a city (which I really would like), but am close enough to friends and crazy girls for it to work that way too.

So, yes. That's me and my life. But it'll be really good for me to start work because obviously when you move back home from studying somewhere, there's no one around any more. And Gloucester is a terrible place for meeting good people.

new jorsey!!!!

The armpit of america. I flew into Newark and i though wed been diverted to middlesbrough!!!

It gets a lot of stick. The train ride from Seacaucus to the city is awful, just disused factories everywhere. My friend likes it because it looks how things would look at the end of the world. I've been other places in Jersey that are very nice, though. It's also the Garden State, of course. Lots of trees and blueberries. It's not bad. (although having said that, I'm avoiding living there!)

Haven't been, but I'll wager it beats the shit out of Waukegan, Illinois.

To be fair, that's not saying much. The whole area between Chicago and Milwaukee is shit. Almost as shit as Milwaukee itself.
