Happy Face 29
Never seen it, but I've also been compared to a hybrid of Napoleon Dynamite and his brother. Have you read the book? It's a grown up music fan's wet dream. Jack Black plays the ultra serious muso who gets physically violent with anyone having a point of view that differs to his most lofty and serious of opinions, but then he'll not accept anyone's comment on his own music whatsoever (even though his music doesn't come close to his own level of quality control for others). I can see that. Although there are some differences; I just get frustrated with people who refuse to give new stuff a go. I'd love for everyone to listen to and enjoy what I like. As for my own music, I am fully aware that I've not made anything (with maybe one exception) that I'd ever try and sell or gig around. I do have a few people (not personal friends) who enjoy the music, though, so I feel as though even if it's niche, at least there's a small audience. And at least I know I do it for fun right now, and making music is enjoyable for me. And at least I have my own sound!

David Kelly 1280
Wolf Parade are superb and Sunset Rubdown are very good also (especially They Took A Vote) but I'm also very disapointed so far with the Swan Lake album especially after I loved Destroyers album this year. I'm wondering if it's the Frog Eyes influnce is too strong as from what limited amounty I've heard of them sounds quite a bit like SL. Oh and none of them really sound that much like Modest Mouse other then Krug does sound a fair bit like Isaac Brock.

I think Patrokles is a talented musician (based on the few covers I've heard) who's obviously earnest about it and so he deserves respect. If I was him I'd just get myself in a band with a stronger vocalist though.

The problem is that around here, it's very hard to find people who aren't into metal/urban. I do also feel that my voice works for certain songs (when I find the right kind of melody) but that for many of the covers, it really doesn't work at all. I'm thinking of taking the covers down and just putting more originals up, because that's what I'd rather be judged on, but in actuality, most will listen to the covers first and I can see how it'd be a turn-off. Or maybe I could put a few more of my instrumentals up too! Edited October 12, 2006 by Patrokles

Guest Patrokles
For anyone interested, the songs I like to be judged on re. originals are these one: http://bensmusic.co.uk/Songs/Originals/Emily/Emily.mp3 http://bensmusic.co.uk/Songs/Originals/5%2.../27th%20may.mp3 So if you don't like those then there's no hope. David Kelly 1280
Emily's better than 27th May (which immediately looses points for the use of the word Soccer), I'm worried that I understood what the song was about though. Usually I haven't got a clue so I don't know whether that means there's something wrong with it. The singings not that bad but I must admit the music's better. Emily is pretty straightforward, I wrote the words in my head on the way to Sainsbury's one day. I'd love to be able to sing really well, but at the same time I can take heart from numerous other bands/vocalists who aren't amazing but know how best to use their voice. I think that's my current issue, working out how to use it, and having enough conviction in it.

Well I think Jeff Magmun's voice is pretty awfull but his use of it on In An Aeroplane is nothing short of amazing. Colin Melloy's no great shakes either but again he uses it well. I mention those two because they both did come to mind when I was listening to Emily. Don't go thinking your that good mind you

ewerk 31555
Can the mods make Patrokles his own music forum? Already has one at Bensmusic.co.uk doesn't he? Anyone signed up? No but thanks to that link I now know what a lyrical genius he is. Everyone is a classic. Song For Beth being my personal favourite. It was a simple, fun song. The lyrics are simple and fun. A more complex song, eg. Emily, has more complex lyrics. You can sit behind your keyboard tippy-tappying but the fact is you're just another non-entity who will never achieve anything and so adopt a whingy 'I'll just be negative about everyone else' attitude. All of the songs on my website were knocked out reasonably quickly and are all available free. I am fully aware that none are necessarily commercially viable. I play everything on the recordings. 99% of my songs were made for friends and are especially significant for them. They all enjoy them. That's all that matters. If I respected your opinion, I'm sure I'd be terribly upset. But the fact is, you're a cocksucker who has never achieved and never will. How did you figure that one out? You really are too easy to wind up.

In my opinion, that's a wee bit scarier than me explaining something to you.
