Guest Patrokles
Spencer Krug has a very distinctive voice. He started in a band called Wolf Parade, went on to record an album with some other people under the moniker of Sunset Rubdown, and recently has been part of a supergroup with Dan Bejar of Destroyer/New Pornographers fame, and also the guy from Frog Eyes. Unfortunately the latter album is shite, but does include an excellent song with Krug on vocals. I confess that when I first heard Sunset Rubdown (my introduction to Krug), I wasn't overly convinced. They Took a Vote & Said No was a song I liked immediately, but the rest were a bit harder to like. However, The Men Are Called Horsemen There grew on me over time and is now one of my favourite songs. The sheer scope of it is very impressive, and all credit to any song that tops 7 minutes and never gets boring. The dynamics are great, especially the middle section that begins 'If I were a horse...' and finishes with '... but I am no horse, and you are no angel!' Wolf Parade I subsequently and more recently got into, but the WP works are probably Krug's most consistently rewarding body of work, esp. Dear Sons & Daughters of Hungry Ghosts, Grounds for Divorce, & This Heart's on Fire. Of the Swan Lake (supergroup) stuff, as mentioned before, the only really worthwhile one (one of the few he actually sings anyway) is very good and is called All Fires. There's a very good bit about the flooding of a town, which runs: one thousand people did what they could they found a steeple and tore up the wood five hundred pieces means five hundred float one thousand people means five hundred don't Here are links to the songs mentioned. Obviously, because his voice is pretty distinctive, and all of his projects are clearly HIM, it's very rewarding if you like it, but less so if you don't: They Took a Vote & Said No All Fires The Men Are Called Horsemen There Dear Sons & Daughters of Holy Ghosts This Heart's On Fire Modern World Grounds For Divorce (ep version- not as good as the album version, but the album one isn't around) Edited October 12, 2006 by Patrokles

Guest Patrokles
you know I'd never heard of him and thanks to you I now know why............. Your prerogative. If one other person who had never heard anything by him likes him now, then this post was worthwhile, even if a thousand others don't. That's the thing about music. Everyone's got different taste. Rob W 0
Well I'll listen to owt (always remembering that Country Music induces suicide, mind) so it would be useful if you could palce him in the Pop Pantheon by reference to some more "mainstream" acts From your description I have no idea if he sounds like M'nM, 50 cent, James Blunt , Cliff Richard or the Who

There is a hole for everyone I just liek to know what the hell he's talking about - I might REALLY embarass myself by mentioning one of Patrokles suggestions as the "the coming thing" in the "Colin Cambell" in Shields only to find out that they are a pre teens girl band or summat.......... Unfortunately there aren't really too many amazing hot new things around at the moment (although a lot of the slightly less new people are putting stuff out). Having said that, a lot of stuff hits here a good few months after they're the next big thing in America (the Arcade Fire being a prime example), so it's hard to say. No but thanks to that link I now know what a lyrical genius he is. Everyone is a classic. Song For Beth being my personal favourite. It was a simple, fun song. The lyrics are simple and fun. A more complex song, eg. Emily, has more complex lyrics. You can sit behind your keyboard tippy-tappying but the fact is you're just another non-entity who will never achieve anything and so adopt a whingy 'I'll just be negative about everyone else' attitude. All of the songs on my website were knocked out reasonably quickly and are all available free. I am fully aware that none are necessarily commercially viable. I play everything on the recordings. 99% of my songs were made for friends and are especially significant for them. They all enjoy them. That's all that matters. If I respected your opinion, I'm sure I'd be terribly upset. But the fact is, you're a cocksucker who has never achieved and never will.
