Guest Patrokles
There was a thread about bad ones, so I figure I'll redress the balance. I don't personally believe that a cover can be good if it's just a straight take on the original that sounds identical. Therefore, Bauhaus' version of Ziggy Stardust doesn't count, brilliantly Bowie-ish as it is. (or Of Montreal's version of Friends of Mine) Bridges & Balloons- The Decemberists Balloon Song- The Aislers Set Single Girl- 16 Horsepower Thicker Than a Smokey- 6 Organs of Admittance Afraid- Espers Lady d'Arbanville- And Also the Trees Telegram Sam- Bauhaus The Model- Big Black Make it With You- Dusty Springfield Frosty the Snowman- Cocteau Twins Oh, Coal Black Smith (the Two Magicians)- Current 93 Leavin' on Your Mind- The Czars See That My Grave is Kept Clean- The Dream Syndicate Victoria- The Fall Dancing Barefoot- The Feelies The Dolphins- Tim Buckley 90% of Scott Walker's Brel covers, esp. Mathilde, Jackie, & Amsterdam Hazy Paradise- Ghost Great Big Kiss- The Heartbreakers Blue Moon- Hi Name is Alive My Little Red Book- Love Most of Low's covers; I Started a Joke, Surfer Girl, Blowin' in the Wind, Back Home Again, etc. True Love Will Find You In The End- Papa M Venus- Peter Laughner Let's Dance- The Ramones etc, etc, etc. I can't be arsed. peasepud 59
G.U.N. did a fantastic cover of GrandMaster Flash's White Lines. Personally though, a cover is only good if its totally different to the original, for instance Travis doing Britneys "Baby hit me one more time" was inspired. Marilyn Manson's cover of Depeche Modes Personal Jesus, one for Gemmill here but Erasure always did good Abba covers. Theres one or two more but me heeds puggled at the mo. oooh oooh how could I forget Ian Brown doing Thriller and Billie Jean.

Guest Patrokles
Coil did a cover of Tainted Love too. I had a friend who adored it and would sing along is his best Jhon Balance voice. I personally don't like it. But it's certainly worth a listen, simply because Coil make it their song. It's more distinctly Coil than Soft Cell. The video too is considered pretty important. It's well worth a watch/listen. http://youtube.com/watch?v=eo3TUtRnZi4 If you want a truly miserable- yet somehow gratifying- experience, listen to Fire of the Mind by Coil, and bear in mind Balance died shortly after recording it. It begins like this (excerpt): http://brainwashed.com/common/sounds/mp3/c...of_the_mind.mp3 For anyone interested, the Tainted Love cover and video were produced in reaction to the AIDS epidemic of the time (mid-late 80s) and all profits went to the Terrence Higgins Trust. Trivia fans will notice a cameo by Marc Almond. Edited October 1, 2006 by Patrokles
