Kieron Dyer has set his sights on mid-October to make his comeback for Newcastle United after a nightmare year through injury.

The Magpies midfielder made just six starting appearances for the club last term and 13 in total because of a series of hamstring problems which threatened to end his career at one stage.

Dyer has returned to training in the North East, with the help of experts and medical staff aiding his recovery.

The England international is now targeting the visit of Bolton Wanderers to St James' Park on October 15 to make his first team return.

"I want to get involved as soon as possible," Dyer insisted.

"Where the manager is so good, he says he does not mind keeping me out an extra two weeks just to be 100 per cent sure.

"After the international week, we have a couple of reserve games against Liverpool away and I think we have got a re-arranged game against Wigan.

"I am looking to be involved in both games and then hopefully that will put me in good stead for the senior fixture against Bolton."

While boss Glenn Roeder has been cautious about rushing his pacey star back too soon, the England international feels much more confident in his recuperation now than ever before.

"When I have come back from my hamstring injuries in the past, when you go on a sprint, you are always thinking of your hamstring," he added.

"But this time when I am training, it does not even cross my mind. Once I am training and running after the ball, I am just thinking about getting the ball and am not even concerned about my hamstrings.

"That is the way it should be, and I should be fine."

With Michael Owen out for the majority of the season and £10 million man Obafemi Martins still struggling to find the net on a regular basis, Dyer's return will be a welcome boost for the team's attack.

Meanwhile, a scan on Shola Ameobi's ankle injury has revealed no permanent damage to the area, and he could feature against Levadia Tallinn on Thursday night.
