Former Uruguay striker Dario Silva has suffered serious injuries after a car crash in his homeland.

Silva is currently in intensive care after crashing in Montevideo on Sunday.

The former Portsmouth striker underwent emergency surgery and it is feared he might have to have his lower right leg amputated.

Former Uruguay internationals Elbio Pappa and Dardo Pereira were also in the car but they suffered minor injuries.

The doctor treating Silva Mario Cancela admitted that the leg injury was a major worry.

"It's the condition of the leg which worries us," said Cancela.

"It's a very complex injury and a real risk."

Silva is currently without a club after leaving Portsmouth last February.

Former Portsmouth striker Dario Silva has had his right leg amputated and remains in a serious condition following a car crash in Uruguay.

He lost control of the vehicle, which hit a row of street lights.

The 33-year-old's doctor in the Montevideo hospital said: "Silva's situation is absolutely not solved. We are worried about possible infection."

Former Uruguay internationals Elbio Pappa and Dardo Pereira were also in the car but suffered minor injuries.

The doctor confirmed Silva's leg amputated from the knee down.

Silva was a member of Uruguay's 2002 World Cup squad and played 49 matches for his country, scoring 15 goals.

The striker left Portsmouth by mutual consent in February and was not attached to another club at the time of the accident.

Shame really. Don't like to read that about anyone.

Writes Mediawatch reader Rob Calver:

'Sad news about Dario Silva's car crash. You may have thought the Pompey statement was poor*, but not as bad as the comment made by the BBC Radio Solent presenter I was listening to in the car on the way down to the game last night. He said 'it's a crippling blow for the lad'.

'You don't say.'

* "Portsmouth would like to wish him a full recovery," declared a statement on the club's official website.
