As the fallout from Newcastle's ill-tempered defeat to Liverpool this Wednesday continues, Celestine Babayaro has been charged with violent conduct for apparently catching Dirk Kuyt in the face with an elbow during the game.

The incident was not seen by the match officials but was caught on video and highlighted in reports of the game.

"According to fast-track procedures for such cases, along with the charge Babayaro has been offered the automatic penalty of a three-match suspension," read an FA statement today. "He has until 6pm on Monday 25 September to respond to the charge."

He didn't appeal which means it takes effect straight away, too. I'm not sure why they didn't appeal just so that it gave Bernard the week or two he needed to get back into the picture. As it is, we're not looking too good for Everton. I wouldn't move Ramage out of the centre, personally, so we're looking at one from Duff, Taylor and N'Zogbia at a push.

Having said that, if Duff did play there, and N'Zogbia on the left wing, maybe it'd help matters.

With any luck, Bernard comes in, plays well, and we can consign Babayaro to the bench.

That's the immediate problem with Everton, though. Both Bernard and Roeder have come out and said he simply isn't ready for Premiership football and won't be for another week or two.

Baba is an idiot and has done this far too often, he even got away with oen on Cahill having already been done for one previously on Cahill!

WHat he did is the reason i'm not complainging and blaming the ref for the Liverpool match. We should have had a couple of pens and its no shock we didn't get them as for NUFC to get a pen requires an actual death of a player. But at 1-0 down we should have went to 10 men and arguably Liverpool could have had a pen as it was a foul in the box.

Aye, if the officials had spotted that that would have been the end of the game there and then for us. What was he thinking exactly?

Hope to hell, when Bernard does return, he can find his form and keep Babayaro out of the team.

Roeder furious at Baba banSep 23 2006

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

An angry Glenn Roeder will throw the book at Newcastle United left-back Celestine Babayaro after the Nigerian international was suspended for violent conduct for the second time in less than a year.

Babayaro will be fined the maximum two weeks' wages which means the punch he threw at Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt in the defeat at Anfield on Wednesday night will cost him in the region of £80,000.

But it's not just the fine. United have until Monday night to respond to the FA charge which means that Babayaro would still have been available for tomorrow's game with Everton at St James' Park.

However, Roeder was so angry with the defender he immediately accepted the three-match ban.

This means he has to re-arrange his defence for tomorrow's Premiership clash, leaving Babayaro unavailable until the derby match with Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on October 21.

However, the Nigerian would be available for Thursday's UEFA Cup tie with Tallinn Levadia but it remains to be seen whether the United boss would play him.

Roeder has every right to be disappointed. Babayaro has let down his manager, himself, the fans and the rest of his United team-mates by his actions.

Referee Mark Halsey missed the incident - along with a couple of penalty appeals by United - and the first Roeder knew about it was when he watched a re-run of the match on TV on Thursday.

To make matters worse, the FA announcement did not come until lunch-time yesterday and after United had completed their first training session for tomorrow's game with Everton.

This left an angry Roeder a with only today's lighter training session to prepare his defence for a game against a team which are unbeaten and second only to Manchester United as the highest scorers in the Premiership.

Ironically, it was against Everton at Goodison Park in November that the 28-year-old Babayaro was found guilty of a similar offence against Tim Cahill and was sent off for violent conduct and picked up a three-match ban.

And in Roeder's first away game as United manager Babayaro was again sent off against Aston Villa and a one-match ban was doubled because of his offence against Everton.

What is particularly galling for Roeder is that after only having four defenders to choose from at both West Ham and Liverpool, he has Titus Bramble and Steven Taylor fit again but instead of six the United boss has only five players to pick his back four from

Personally, I just cannot understand what Babayaro is thinking of.

He must know that he is not the most popular of United players with the fans yet a player who is, Olivier Bernard, is just a match or two away from challenging him for the left-back slot.

And I believe while United are more concerned about Babayaro's immediate ban, there now has to be a question mark against his whole future at St James' Park.

Meanwhile, in the absence of Shay Given, Roeder is talking to an experienced keeper to come in on loan until the January transfer window and he hopes to make an announcement early next week.

For the wages Babayaro is on he's offering us nothing in the way of value, I'm hoping Bernard can come in and do a job until january with Wayne Bridge coming in then, hopefully Baba can then be moved on with Bernard being a back up player on a much lower wage.

I was gutted we didn't get Bridge in the summer.
