I don’t listen to it too much anymore but I love his self-titled album which really just feels like a follow-on from where he left off with Talk Talk.

Agreed, it was impossible to buy a copy until, I think it was last year when they reissued it.
You heard Held By Trees? It Hollis's son and a bunch of musos who were part of the recording of Spirit of Eden, Laughing Stock and MH's solo album. It's different but you can heard Mark Hollis in it.

Haven’t heard them but I’ll give them a whirl, cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Also on mixcloud (and soundcloud) Greg Wilson is worth a follow. Been DJ-ing for about 50 years and also is a master of the re-edit. But for the pop crazed youngsters of a certain age, if you go on his mixcloud profile, go to ’Shows’ and scroll down, there’s some ‘time capsule’ shows which are all funk and soul type stuff from a certain month in the mid/late 70s like the one below:

@Monkeys Fist The new Rose City Band album is out and it’s much the same tbh. Very well done though.

Had a couple of listens to this.

it’s a hit/miss for me.

The slow, down tempo stuff is excellent, fantastic slide guitar on them, reminds me a little of Los Hermanos Guitierrez.

Loved those.

The more upbeat stuff I was distracted listening to, as it reminded me of something but I couldn’t think what.

Second listen and it hit me on the first track- they sound like Lloyd Cole and the Commotions doing an Eagles tribute act

Which sort of ruined it for me.

I’ll come back to this once I’ve forgotten about Lloyd, as I loved their previous album, and the slower stuff on here is very nicely done.

Anyway, speaking of the Brothers Gutierrez…

They put a new album out last year which is missed, so whacked it on, on the road.

Very much in the same vein as their other albums tbh, but no less excellent.
(They’re pretty much the AC/DC of instrumental slide guitar with a spaghetti western flavour, come to think of it)
Here’s the title track

When I’m listening to these at home, I find getting in to character makes the experience that much more enjoyable, so…

…grab the poncho/picnic blanket, tuck your jeans in to your wellies, and dig out your lass’s pink glittery Stetson from her fat mate’s hen do 10 years ago, and start growling gravelly statements at the wife and kids like

” You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig.

You dig.“

Dont forget to spit some baccy juice squarely on the dog’s forehead- if you don’t have a dog, mosey on out to the front gate of your hacienda and hockle on any passing mutts.
If their owners/bandidos give you any gyp, just swipe your poncho aside and show them you’re packing heat*

* Fist Jnr wasn’t in to cap guns, so I’ve got to use a plastic Darth Vader light saber… not quite authentic to the Spaghetti Western theme, but the bandidos don’t mess with the sabre nonetheless.

Aye, I’d agree with you on the faster ones being a step down. They should stick to creating an atmosphere as they do on the slower ones more often

Top notch

Their EPs with Leon Bridges are good too. Texas Sun and Texas Moon. And then you should get into Leon Bridges too, so to speak. He’s a fantastic vocalist and his albums are all strong soul albums, all with a different era of focus. 1st album sounds like late 60s, in the groove soul/RnB and he gets progressively more and more 70s as they go

I was quite impressed with their versatility tbh, quite a few varying styles they have, all rooted in a funky base.

no, but i'll give it a whirl 👍

I couldn’t find part 2 anywhere. There were definitely 2 parts to it when they did it s little while back. I wonder if there was some licensing issue with one of the tracks used in part 2.

As far as I'm concerned the two Black Sabbath "Farewell" tours were in the 90's. I saw them on "The End" tour in 2017 and it was basically watching an animatronic Ozzy as a cheap museum exhibit.

Don't get me wrong the rest of the line up is looks great, but it would be a lot more appealing as a festival bill rather than having to sit in a shit seat at the arse end of Villa Park for the best part of 12 hours and paying £300 quid for the privilege.

I'm quite happy to wait for the highlights, would love to see all those bands but not withing the confines of a football stadium, on a plastic seat that fucking miles from the stage. For a whole fucking day.
