PaddockLad 17277
Along with one or two other superannuated old fuckers on here, I take a bit of pride in my 80s/90s musical knowledge. However it's still possible for something to make me drop my bacon sandwich as was the case earlier today...this belter appeared on the old playlist, from a time before Simple Mind were stadium cock rockers, more like weird jockinese synth-punks... Thing is, I mmediately thought it was this proto-trance stomper from the early 90s 🤪

thebrokendoll 9239
@PaddockLad new gold dream is a stunning album, the title track in particular, although I think the version from live at the city of light possibly even betters it. saw simple minds at the milton keynes bowl in '86, fucking superb! (as were big audio dynamite) a year later saw u2 at elland road during the joshua tree tour. remember at the time it was quite often discussed who were the better band between the two. no comparison in my humble opinion. Wasn't there a badly kept rumour that Simple Minds was the band Bono wanted to be based on/bigger than? I bought a secondhand copy of Sister Feelings Call a while ago which is another great album.

Think I definitely preferred U2 at the time, but as Sammy says SM released some great stuff before they made it really big…long before anyone had heard of Acid House this was a floor filler when we were teenagers..

I consider meself very fortunate to have been both old enough to appreciate the punk movement and young enough still to take on the chin the misery of terrible tuesdays after a weekend of raving!

Ayatollah Hermione 13870
Not to take away from those hefty baps, the new Beach House album, which I believe is a collation of various EPs from last year is absolutely class. What a brilliantly consistent band they are

Edit; Is it Dennis Law who’s absolutely failing not to get amongst them?

What a brilliantly consistent band they are Looking forward to this but no it’s not a collection of EPs from last year, what they decide to do is release it in four quarters. So it will be a double album on vinyl and they have been releasing one track from each side, so four tracks each release, every month since they announced it. That means next month with be the fourth and final release and also when they will actually physically make available the whole thing. Anyway. Deffo Law & Bremner, it’ll be a publicity shot they were paid to do before they went to the World Cup in West Germany in 1974….looks a hard days graft

sammynb 3355
I just need to bring this over from Reddit before it is lost forever! Quote Posted by u/VirtuaStiva 6 hours ago Music Patter to Tide us Over I was sceptical about Yard Act considering it sounds exactly like the bands from 15 years ago trying to sound like the bands from 15 years before them but, against my best efforts, I'm enjoying them. Nice to hear a band not take themselves so seriously even if it's nowt you haven't heard before Not sure who VirtuaStiva is (hands up please) but yes Yard Act are good and are part of the wider post-punk revival that has been going on for the last 5 years but I'm not sure where the bands from 15 years ago come from. Yeah there was some terrbile commercial shite trying to steal bits of post-punk but they all sounded wrong, except Life Without Building but they were the exception. The thing about this wave is they have all taken that sound from 1979-84 and made some great music. Bands like Shame, IDLES, Courting, Necking that have leant heavily on the punk side of post-punk (so Wire/Magazine inspired) and then you have the Gang of Four inspired bands (Dry Cleaning, Protomartyr, Drahla, B Boys, Viagra Boys, etc) , The Fall inspired bands (Yard Act, Do Nothing, I Like Trains, Dumb, Priests, Low Hummer). Then there is the whole Slits, chick thing with more great bands, Shopping, etc; the Birthday Party inspired bands (Bambara, Lark, etc) and the German post-punk sound, DIAT, AUS, Liik. Post-punk is the strongest it has ever been and no one is trying to sound like Joy Division, which great because no one will ever sound like them again as Interpol found out. Oh and a lot of it is all coming from the Leeds area. Anyway that's way to many words for a music post. Then there is this bunch of crack whores out of Canada! Ayatollah Hermione 13870
Was me and Yard Act could have definitely fit on the back end of an NME compilation in 2006. It literally tapped a vein of nostalgia in me. I’m not hearing what many of those lot in that post are doing that’s particularly fresh but I must not be clever enough or something
