Besty 4
Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has insisted that Newcastle did not make an illegal approach for youngster Nathan Porritt. The Football Association and the Premier League have launched an investigation into the BBC Panorama programme's report on corruption in English football. In the programme, agent Peter Harrison was filmed discussing a possible move away from Teesside for Porritt without Boro's knowledge. Harrison was shown offering Porritt to representatives of Liverpool and Chelsea, and also talked about another meeting he claimed to have had with The Magpies. Middlesbrough do not intend to report any of the three clubs involved, but have submitted an official complaint about Harrison. Gibson also stressed that Newcastle had acted with the utmost integrity throughout the affair. "We got wind of Nathan being offered to Newcastle, but the conversation was taking place at a fairly low level," he told The Times. "Keith Lamb, our chief executive, rang (Newcastle chairman) Freddy Shepherd and told him what was going on. "Freddy didn't know anything about it and his reply was 'Right, I'll stop that immediately'. "Within 30 seconds, Freddy had made sure that any contact with Harrison had ended and we got a commitment from Newcastle that they would never attempt to poach any of our young players." ewerk 30166
There is a fair chance that Harrison was talking shite about our approach in order to try and get more money from Chelsea.
Gemmill 44107
Good craic from Gibson and shows he's an honourable bloke. He could quite easily have kept his mouth shut to cause maximum disruption for us. I like Steve Gibson - proper chairman.

wykikitoon 19807
Gibson is prolly IMO the best chairman in the league. A Smashing bloke, backs his managers, says the right things etc. When that fan chucked his season ticket at McClaren last year, I heard he gave him it back and offerd him to the club for a chat etc. Well played Gibson. Runs his club well, backs the manager with money, and the only time you ever hear from him it tends to be soemthign well said and that needed commenting on. Probably his only mistake was backing Robson for too long when he was there because he got on well with him and other than that, you can't fault him as a chairman or as a person.
