Roeder: I Wanted Tevez

Glenn Roeder has revealed he was interested in bringing West Ham's Argentinian star Carlos Tevez to St James' Park.

But instead Tevez and his fellow Argentinian Javier Mascherano will make their first Premiership starts for the Hammers against United tomorrow at Upton Park.

Before leaving for London and a game against his former club, Roeder told me today: "Tevez was one of the players who impressed me in the World Cup and I made a discreet inquiry about him.

"It was no more than one telephone call, but I was told that we had absolutely no chance of getting him and I did not pursue my inquiry any further.

"That's why I was surprised when I found out that Alan Pardew had signed both Tevez and Mascherano from Corinthians."

There is a lot of talk in football that Pardew had little say in the signing of the two Argentinian superstars, but the West Ham supporters are understandably absolutely delighted.

But, perhaps rather ominously Tevez, has thrown his first rant on the eve of tomorrow's game after complaining to West Ham officials that the apartment they have found for him in London is not big enough.

United's Antoine Sibierski isn't quite in the same class as Tevez as a player, but there will be no such reaction from the Frenchman when he discovers he is on the bench at Upton Park despite scoring the winner in Thursday's UEFA Cup win over Levadia in Tallinn.

Roeder added: "If Shola Ameobi passes a fitness test then Sibierski will be on our bench tomorrow, but he will accept this in the right manner.

"For we have signed someone who lives his life like a professional footballer should.

"He is very serious about the game and everything he does smacks of professionalism.

"And I know that if he gets his opportunities here he will play a big part for us this season.

"He has a deft touch and an eye not only for a goal, but for a goal-making pass."

If Sibierski's attitude is spot on, the same cannot be said about Charles N'Zogbia, who had the proverbial pet lip on when Roeder substituted him in the second half on Thursday afternoon. It was noticeable there wasn't the usual handshake between player and manager when he came off.

For me, N'Zogbia is probably the best young player in the North East today, but he has got to show just how hungry he is to go even further, starting tomorrow when first he has to fight off a challenge from a fired-up James Milner to play on the opposite flank to Damien Duff.

United still have Titus Bramble and Steven Taylor struggling because of their respective knee and foot injuries. But the good news is that while Olivier Bernard is still a couple of weeks away from being match fit, Celestine Babayaro is ready to return at left-back after being out since he damaged his hamstring at Aston Villa.

Martins is far superior to Tevez anyway. You can tell that because he played better that him yesterday, and his infinity times as many goals than him in the Premierhip.
