It's out in the middle of nowhere so the area is nice and quiet yet in the matter of two hours I could be in NYC or Boston on a whim, and easy accessability to ocean or mountains as the mood may dictate. If you like to walk, follow the coast path and the views are breathtaking. If the sea doesnt appeal im very close to Dartmoor and many national trust owned parks and land. There really is so much to do here, i know grockles (tourists) tend to visit Torbay/Dartmouth areas, but really there are so many picturesque lesser known areas that they probably miss (and i much prefer) Torquay United, against all odds we still have a nationwide league club, we're doing so well for such a small town with a high population of elderly folk. And we're not in debt, which is no mean feat!! Come on you yellowsssss!!! Of course living down here has its drawbacks....TORBAY F****** COUNCIL being one! Car parking is a nightmare, you're reduced to very expensive car parks. The summer months are so busy, its best to avoid the local beach/seafront. As for the town at night (during summer) its packed full of drunken lager louts causing trouble and throwing up outside the clubs. You cant get on a bus as theyre packed full of students! So many people live here that house prices are very high, we seem to attract loads of scousers and jocks (no disrespect) but there is a severe lack of accomodation now. Obviously we are well known for the amount of elderly that retire here too, so we're bulging at the seams! But saying that i cant imagine id ever want to leave Devon.. Funny thing about that remark-sums up how different Yanks are to Brits about distances. A two hour drive is considered a hop to the neighbouring town cos the USA is so big, here tho two hours would get me from Manchester to past Birmingham and I think of that as a right mission. Even London on the train is 2 hours 5 mins and I think of that as the other end of the country. Not saying I wouldnt bother going to NYC if it was only two hours away (obviously) but funny how you have such a different perspective on scale. That difference is one of the biggest I've noted as yet- our completely different perspective regarding distances and travel. I'll never forget having breakfast in a B&B while on hols to the Channel Islands and listening to an english couple go on about yanks... more specifically how anyone could justify having two vehicles for family use. It was amusing to hear the owner mildly scold them regarding their ignorance of the sheer size of this country and the distances between point A and point B. I live in a cul-de-sac you get no through traffic We have a canny park 2mins walk away (the one off whickham highway) I'm a 2min drive from the A1 / Team Valley Takes me 10min to drive into town or 10-30min to be in decent northumberland countryside. It's near my team, pubs and supermarkets and the boys school is only built about 10 years and is great. Plus i live in a 3 bedroom house which we bought before property prices went mad, so the mortgage is buttons. The only downside is one of my neighbours is from Pelaw and he's a mackem.
