Tommy Craig gone?

According to .com, the reserves match last night was handled by Clark and McDermott, "giving credence to recent speculation" that we have parted company with Tommy Craig.

A couple of things: firstly, I didn't know there was any recent speculation about this, and secondly, wasn't he about the only qualified coach we have at the club (outside of maybe Kevin Bond)?

Does seem a bit odd. It's not that long ago that it was touted he'd be the 'official' manager if they couldn't get clearance for Roeder.

Clark's now supposed to be running the academy isn't he? And what the hell does Terry Mac actually do these days?

What has Terry Mac EVER done since finishing his playing career? Did Roeder ever play in the same team as Macdermott?

Stupid decision if true but it would not surprise me. Hes been loyal to the club, having done a good job year after year and also comes with alot of experience from north of the border with Aberdeen and is a former U21 boss, but of course we have Lee "local boy, geordie legend" Clark to take his place of course.

Clark and McDermott - dream team.

Well, I've heard Oliver describe Clark as the archetypal Geordie and, given his 'tache and hair do, McDermott must be his Scouse equivalent. Marriage made in (Renton's version of) heaven tbh

He came strolling out of the tunnel at Villa just before kick-off with his mobile glued to his lug. Must have been a big race due to start at kick-off time!

Isn't he Shearer's lackey at a pub near Ponteland, have heard he's the runner to the bar to get Big Al's drinks in for him.

Tommy Craig has stepped down as reserve team coach of Newcastle United. The Scotsman was absent from Newcastle's second string friendly against Benfield Bay Plastics last night, with Lee Clark and Terry McDermott looking after the team.

Craig's no-show fuelled speculation he has left the club, although no-one at United was available to comment on the situation today.

Glenn Roeder and number two Kevin Bond were also in the dugout for the 4-3 win but it appears that United have tweaked their coaching set-up.

Craig appeared to have a prominent role at United, with the reserves currently on a 15- game unbeaten run at home.

And the former Toon star, who has also looked after the team on a caretaker basis when Kenny Dalglish was sacked in 1998, is a current holder of the FIFA Pro-Licence. He was also on standby to take charge had the Premier League blocked United's bid to have Roeder in full charge for the final two games of last season.

Craig is a respected figure within the Scottish FA too and recently put Alan Shearer through his paces as the United legend took his first steps in coaching.

Craig had guided United's second string to a top-six finish last season in the Premiership Reserve League and won the Northumberland Cup last May beating Blyth Spartans 2-1.

Since joining the club as coach during the Kenny Dalglish era, Craig has worked at reserve team level and was renowned for helping to develop youngsters such as Steven Taylor, Shola Ameobi and Peter Ramage.

Craig joined Newcastle as a player in 1974 after the Glaswegian enjoyed spells at Aberdeen and Sheffield Wednesday. He also won one Scottish cap in 1976, the same year United got to Wembley in the League Cup final defeat against Man City.

After making over 100 appearances for United and scoring 23 goals, Craig moved to Aston Villa in 1977. He has also coached at Hibs, Celtic and Aberdeen.

If Craig has been forced out so Clark can take over the reserves then this is bollocks. If he's gone because he's taken a job elsewhere then fair enough. He's been doing a very good with the reserves, to get rid so Clark or Terry Mac aren't spare parts would be a fucking farce.

Strange. I cannot say that I was really overwhelmed by what came through the youth set up and the reserve level in recent years, but if infact the alternative is Clark and Terry Mac then it is an absolute strange decision - especially a couple of weeks into the season.

'Right Glenn, due to our recent money problems we need to get rid of a coach.'

'Ok. Terry Mac.'

'Anyone at all Glenn, whoever you think.'

'Terry Mac.'

'Good, Tommy Craig it is. Never liked the man, not Northern enough.'

'He's from Scotland'

'Cockney bastard'
