After the thoroughly underwhelming events of the last 48 hours, here's a quick summary of where we stand, ahead of what is potentially a schedule of 30 games until the transfer window re-opens in 2007.

 

3 Goalkeepers: Given, Harper, Krul.

 

7 defenders: Carr, Babayaro, Bramble, Taylor, Moore, Ramage, Bernard.

 

10 midfielders: Emre, Solano, Duff, Parker, Milner, N'Zogbia, Butt, Pattison, O'Brien, Sibierski.

 

3 strikers: Martins, Luque, Rossi.

  

3 casualties: (Ameobi), (Dyer), (Owen)

 

(reserves: Atkin, Cave, Finnigan, Gate, Huntington).

 

That compares with the situation that Roeder inherited back in February:

Frankly we're baffled as to why he's appeared and what we're going to do with him.

 

Seeing other competent players being traded during the day for what were hardly vast sums merely added to our annoyance.

 

The late arrival of the Frenchman was surely borne of pure desperation - given the fact he's neither an attacker nor a defender, the two areas were are light in. We could hardly have done worse if we'd tried.

 

Meanwhile Rossi may be a great player one day, but is on a par with Michael Chopra in terms of first team goals and experience. Nice that our development of young talent extends to helping other clubs though.

 

And the fact he's a year younger than our reserve centre forward Carl Finnigan tells the story of a failure to develop talent that Roeder cannot be blamed for, but which fundamentally undermines us. We always thought we'd be a buying club - we're a borrowing one now...

 

So, a has-been (or never was) and a maybe. No wonder we were in pole position to sign them - there was nobody else on the grid.

 

And as for the final day pantomime involving Milner and a fat-arsed Australian who has now been poised to sign for us during the last four transfer windows, what a waste of effort. And petrol.

 

Are we honestly any better off now than we were 24 hours before the window closed?

 

Trying to find something positive, Rossi may prove useful and gives us pace along with Martins, but is no taller than the Nigerian.

 

And unlike Milner, Rossi is a striker - which is more than can be said for an unwanted 32 year-old who hides behind the euphemism of  "utlility player".

 

But in our haste to flog Milner, we're now left with one thoroughly disenchanted player, who so far this season had looked to be genuinely trying to play for the shirt. He could now be excused for taking the proverbial as he counts down the days to January.

 

While we've had a few emails downplaying Milner's contribution and effectiveness to the cause, we would far rather be watching and supporting someone showing his attitude, rather than the questionable contribution of our Peruvian, Spanish and Turkish contingent thus far.

 

The Luque Espanyol link that surfaced remains unconfirmed, but it's hard to comprehend that we didn't take a genuine chance to get him off the wage bill even. We'd rather have had a 34 year-old Andy Cole, than bloody Andy Pandy.

 

Overall we seem to have lost sight of the fact that players lose form, as well as getting injured and suspended.

 

On that basis the lack of cover in key positions such as full back means that we are at the mercy of the players currently wearing the shirt

 

Quite simply, if they can put their boots on, then they get a game. With no viable replacements are in the reserves, get set for another season of total football NUFC style, ie players shoe-horned into unfamiliar positions.

 

PS: The late arrival of Olivier Bernard has frankly tickled us, as we always rated him during his first spell with us.

 

Having monitored his career go down the dumper since he flounced out of SJP believing his wages didn't match his status, we remained convinced that surely at the age of 26 he wasn't totally on the scrapheap. Well, we'll be finding out first hand soon enough.....

 

If a chastened yet still effective player returns to us for nowt and either takes the left back shirt off Babayaro, or causes the Nigerian to buck his ideas up, then this has been a smart piece of business and a worthwhile gamble.
