Huth hijack bid

Aug 30 2006

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Newcastle United have made a late bid to hijack Robert Huth's £5m move from Chelsea to Middlesbrough.

But United knew that they had a battle on their hands, with the German international on Teesside this morning for talks.

United woke up to headlines today screaming that they had lost out to Middlesbrough for both Huth and their former central defender Jonathan Woodgate.

But United were never serious contenders for Woodgate because, with fellow England internationals Michael Owen and Kieron Dyer already in their treatment room, they were worried about his fitness.

And if the Real Madrid central defender if had come to St James' Park and suffered any injury problems United would have been coughing up around £250,000 a week in wages for players on the sidelines.

Not surprisingly, in their current economic position and even taking into account what a fabulous defender Woodgate is when he gets on to the pitch, it was a risk that United were not prepared to take.

But Glenn Roeder obviously thinks that Huth, who was only 22 last week, is worth pursuing - and from the moment he doffed his cap to the 6ft 2in, 17-times capped defender when Chelsea were at St James' Park at the end of last season the United manager has been on his trail.

Roeder will also have spoken to his big pal Joe Cole and asked his former protege's opinion of his Stamford Bridge colleague.

Certainly, after the way the United defence let in the water at Villa Park on Sunday, and bearing in mind that they have a team basically lacking in height, Huth would appear to be a good acquisition if they can pull it off.

With Huth on his way to Teesside today, Middlesbrough were definitely in pole position but I know that Huth has a lot of time for Roeder and respects what he has done at St James' Park and this could be the key.

United have had 31-year-old Egyptian international central defender Wael Gomaa on trial with them but he will not be returning.

Nor will Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge be coming to St James' Park after Ashley Cole's proposed move from Arsenal to Stamford Bridge broke down.

Bridge's performances so far this season have suddenly made Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho see the former Southampton left-back in a different light - and this has turned out to be bad news for United.

So far this transfer window we've signed a left winger who, good as he is, we didn't need, and a striker who is completely unproven in the premiership. Now we're trying to sign a defender who has almost signed for someone else, who not many people rate.

Good work NUFC.

£5m ffs. Leave well alone and let them have him.

There's a gem in every Oliver article. What a cock.

we've stood aside a fair bit recently so i wouldn't be surprised if we obliged.

the problem is, if we don't get huth. who the hell are we going to get? doesn't sound like bridge is coming.

shirley we can't let the window close with just 6 recognised defenders, almost all of them gash...

...or can we?

We must have been second on the grid after all. Class the way Oliver is so bereft of writing talent that he has to steal Roeder's shit motor-racing reference to use in his article.

How is it fucking obvious? He's been on his trail since the last game of last season, ffs, utter bullshit! And what the fuck does "doffed his cap" mean? You utter tit Oliver...

He thinks he's so worth pursuing that the lad is about to sign for Boro, you complete knobhead, Oliver. Face like a bag of prawn crackers tbh.

I wondered what happened to Alan D'Ohliver but the man himself has made him totally defunct. Practically every paragraph is comedy gold.

Not for the first time either, he would have signed for them a month ago but for the problems with the medical. Glenn's obviously wandered off the 'trail' and is now lost in some bushes somewhere.

That also explains that Oliver has a different meaning for the word "trail"...

Have Huth and Woodgate been confirmed signings yet at the riverside?

The first pictures shown on SSN yesterday were in the afternoon you would have thought that it would have been wrapped up by now.

Perhaps we are working on these?

Glenn's probably waiting outside the Riverside right now with the rest of the autograph hunters...

Awesome trick that would be. Glenn, actually no, make it Bond - don't want it to be too obvious - hands Woody a folded up piece of paper, "sign that mister", then unfolds it to show a contract probably worth far too much money.
