I can understand how she might not want to attempt an escape or grow fond of him, years of fear with him as her only contact could have led to brainwashing and her not knowing anything different. I can't think how she can ever lead a normal life when half of her life (more than half of her "memorable" life") is of living in a cellar and being abused. She's basically missed out on everything normal in the years that mould what sort of a person you become. Bizarre to even think about. Hopefully she can cope with it all. Against the death penalty because I think it's morally wrong to take a life. I would have very severe sentences for something like this though, i.e. banged up for life (not a 'life sentence'). I've become less sure about this standpoint in recent years though because I sometimes find myself thinking 'they should just kill that cunt for what he/she did'. Other reasons included potential miscarriages of justice and I could envisage a situation like in America whereby people are on death row for years and years because of seemingly endless legal wranglings. Regarding "endless legal wranglings", there's a very straight forward solution - the first people on death row should be all the legal professionals . But from a purely pragmatic point of view, the only reason to kill them instead of throw away the key is money, and not real money either, but money in the most ethereal sense. I'm not quite that cold. I've never bought the deterrent argument, either, my argument has always been a simple removal from society, for the benefit of society. Though with these spates of random attacks that seem so prevalent in western society they might think twice if they saw their mate gunned down by the police for waving a knife about, now there's a world I want to live in!
