Jimbo 175
Toon fail to Klose deal Aug 21 2006 By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle Werder Bremen have told Newcastle United to forget all about signing their German inter-national Miroslav Klose. And now United will concentrate all their efforts in bringing Inter Milan's Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins to St James' Park. But reports that United have agreed a fee with Inter for Martins, or with Real Madrid for Thomas Gravesen, are premature at the moment. Roeder was reluctant to talk about transfer news today because he accepts that he could be repeating himself and that the United supporters want action and not words. However, he did tell me: "At this moment nothing is agreed with any club as far as any incoming transfers are concerned. "But there are a lot of on-going things happening behind the scenes, and just because we got three points against Wigan Athletic on Saturday we are not sitting with our feet up. "We have three or four balls up in the air, and everyone from the chairman down is working hard to bring those balls down." Roeder, Freddy Shepherd and chief operating officer Russell Cushing were all at St James' Park at 9am yesterday and did not leave until tea-time. Fans will have noticed that there has not been an official team picture taken by United, even though the season has now started, because they are waiting for the new arrivals. The Chronicle revealed on Friday night that Roeder's No 2 Kevin Bond saw Klose score twice for Germany against Sweden on Wednesday night to go with the five he grabbed in the World Cup which made him the competition's top scorer. But Roeder told me: "Werder Bremen are in the Champions League again this season and they have made it clear that Klose is not for sale." As it happens, Martins is surplus to requirements at the San Siro, but United are taking claims that Inter want £20m for him with the proverbial pinch of salt. The Chronicle's story last week that United were concerned about the true age of Martins went round the football world. But really it surely doesn't matter whether Martins is 21 or 28 because he is proven goalscorer and regarded as one of the fastest strikers in Europe. However, what does matter on this score is the price, and Shepherd will be locked in talks with the Italians, probably for the next couple of days. Craig 6682
He's managed to get a work permit in another EEC country so surely we shouldn't have any problems on that score... Mind you, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if NUFC have overlooked that minor detail!
