Newcastle eye Russian hotshot

Newcastle are considering a move for Russia sharpshooter Alexander Kerzhakov - after missing out on top target Dirk Kuyt.

Toon boss Glenn Roeder has been pursuing Dutch international Kuyt for the entire summer but has conceded defeat in landing the Feyenoord man, who is set for a £10million switch to Liverpool.

Clubcall understands that Newcastle could now switch their attention to Zenit St Petersburg frontman Kerzhakov.

The Russian international is also believed to be a target for UEFA Cup holders Sevilla.

Kerzhakov, 23, is one of the most predatory strikers in his home country with a record of 95 goals in 197 matches.

The pacy frontman, a similar type of goalpoacher as Michael Owen, was voted Russian player of the year last season and finished the previous campaign as top scorer with 17 goals in 27 matches.

With two weeks left of the transfer window I imagine that'll be how Glen is identifying his targets.

<_<

If the story is true, our interest in the player would surely collide with Roeder's statement that he's only looking at proven players from big leagues?

Aren't Zenit St Petersburg loaded anyway? I don't think they need the money, which means we would be paying over the odds. Again.

I believe the root of this clubcall exclusive is simply that Oliver mentioned a Russian striker, Clubcall read the article online, put their thinking caps on, tried to work out which Russian striker is half decent, and came up with the article.

.com name four: Andrei Arshavin; Alexander Kerzhakov; Roman Pavlyuchenko; Pavel Pogrebnyak.

Black & White Russians?

I've never heard of any of them to be honest, but the first two seem to have decent scoring records.

Hmmm, quite a range there. Do you think we could afford two and play them in combi-nation?

If we just took the two Zenit ones then at least people wouldn't be able to complain they hadn't had a full pre-season to work on their partnership.
