Barney 0
PORTO ENTER VIANA RACE http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.a...l=football_home Porto have become the latest club to try and rescue Hugo Viana from his Newcastle nightmare. Sir Bobby Robson paid Sporting Lisbon £8.5 million for Viana's services in the summer of 2002, but - despite a huge reputation - the midfielder failed to make an impact on Tyneside. Following two mediocre seasons at St James' Park, the 22-year-old spent last term back on loan at Sporting where he enjoyed a far more productive campaign. He is now keen to secure a permanent move from English football and a number of clubs have enquired about his situation. Sporting wanted to take him back to Portugal but were put off by Newcastle's demands. The Magpies are determined to recoup at least £4.5 million of the fee they shelled out which also resulted in Spanish outfit Celta Vigo dropping their interest in the player. However, after confirming their interest in Viana, Porto have revealed they are prepared to meet Newcastle's valuation, describing the figure as 'acceptable with certain conditions'. The player himself conceded he would welcome a move to the former European champions, insisting his only desire was to play regularly. "Porto is a great club, but I repeat that my only objective is to play," he stated. Edited August 17, 2005 by Barney
