Roeder thrilled with Milner

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder feels the club's fans will see a new and improved James Milner this season.

The ex-Leeds winger was farmed out on loan to Aston Villa by former boss Graeme Souness and it had been predicted that he would secure a permanent move to the Second City this summer.

However, Roeder's appointment on Tyneside led to a change in thinking and Milner returned to Newcastle after the club turned down an offer from Villa.

Milner has made a real impression on Roeder during pre-season and he will get the chance to shine during Saturday's Intertoto Cup tie with Lillestrom.

"I had not worked with James Milner before but it's two weeks today since we returned to training and in that time I have been very impressed with him," Roeder told the club's website. "He is so versatile.

"And I know that our fans will be delighted to see just how much he has improved after being at Aston Villa for the past 12 months.

"I have to say that he has really benefited from the experience of being away."

Roeder believes he can extract further improvement from Milner.

"I feel that I can work with James and that I can get the best out of him," added Roeder.

"He is a very intelligent player and a deep thinker about the game, and he is a joy to work with.

"But I have told him he will have to play well, and he accepts this."

Kieron Dyer will not feature at the weekend and is unlikely to be fit until September, but the club are happy with how the midfielder is recovering from his latest hamstring injury.

With the lack of anybody coming in and Owen's injury, people like Milner and Luque have the opportunity to justify the transfer fees...which could either go very well or tits up.

In that order, I'd imagine.

Can Milner play as a striker? He's always referred to as a winger but I think I remember him playing up front at Leeds.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Lacks the ability to cross and finish.

Aye, I often thought that watching him at Villa. Got ability alright, but lack of end product. Sure to improve of course.
