Roeder gives Boum a break

Jean Alain Boumsong will be given two weeks French leave to recover from the disappointment of the World Cup final defeat by Italy.

Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder will contact his £8.5m central defender as soon as he arrives home from Germany to tell him to take 18 days holiday before reporting back to St James' Park.

Boumsong, of course, never came off the French substitutes bench in the whole World Cup campaign - but Roeder believes it is important for him to still have a break.

The United boss said today: "Boumsong will be physically fit but he will still need time to unwind and he will go off with his family for a holiday.

"He did not kick a ball in the competition but he was still part of the French squad and he will have been as emotionally involved as the rest of them.
