Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
I think the three sides listed below are probably the top England teams of recent years. But which is the best? Italia'90 ----------------------Shilton Parker – Butcher – Wright – Walker – Pearce ---------Gascoigne – Platt – Waddle ----------------Lineker – Beardsley Euro'96 --------------------Seaman Neville – Southgate – Adams – Pearce Anderton – Ince – Gascoigne – McManaman -------------Shearer – Sheringham World Cup 2006 -------------------Robinson -Neville – Ferdinand – Terry – A.Cole Beckham – Gerrard – Lampard – J.Cole ---------------Owen – Rooney

Tooj 17
Italia 90 for me..... Gazza in his prime was immense to watch As was Shearer in Euro 96 mind... how about a poll

sweetleftpeg 0
Italia 90 was a better team than it looks on paper. Gazza, Lineker, Waddle, and Pedro were all class at the time and even David Platt was a decent footballer. I remember Paul Parker being a canny full back as well. JawD 99
Good question and a tough one. My initial reaction was to say '90 until you look at the line ups. I think you could move more players into '90 from '06 than the other way around. What about the best of the bunch? GK - Shilton (90) RB - Neville (96) CB - Adams (96) CB - Terry (06) LB - Pearce (90) RM - Beckham (06) CM - Gascoigne (90) CM - Gerrard (06) LM - J. Cole (06) CF - Shearer (96) CF - Rooney (06) Tough choices actually and you could pick a cracking team without any of those in. Edit: and curse me for not fitting in Beardsley who would have been great behind those front two. Edited June 8, 2006 by JawD
geordieshandy 0
Putting Gascoigne and Gerrard together is nearly the same as putting Gerrard and Lampard together, too attacking minded, both need a defensive foil. The three in 1990 worked well because there was three centre halves plus the full backs to get back around them.
JawD 99
Well, even after I done it I was thinking maybe better dropping Beckham and J.Cole for Parker and A. Cole as wing backs. Also dropping Neville and pushing Peace into the centre. Extra place maybe for Beardsley. Again, very attacking minded though. Guest alex
Italia 90 for me apart from the likes of Gazza, Waddler, Lineker and Pedro already mentioned people like Pearce, Walker and Parker played really well and were very good at what they did (I think people forget how good Pearce was). Also Shilton and Butcher were class players (even though they were a bit past their sell-by date) and David Platt was a genuine box-to-box player who had great goalscoring ability and he complimented Gazza well. Even Mark Wright played class.
Isegrim 9909
Hmm, as a "neutral" I think it is really difficult to judge. On the paper it might be the best English team ever, but I think that football has improved vastly in most countries (except Jormany). So most teams will send better teams to this World Cup. So maybe winning in the end has become even more difficult nowadays.
