Craig 6707
A suspected car thief who spent 20 hours on a rooftop was delivered cigarettes and a KFC meal - because police wanted to protect his human rights. The 27-year-old climbed up a drain pipe and refused to come down from the three-storey house in Gloucester for the rest of the day. He clambered onto the roof following a police pursuit of a vehicle from Cheltenham to Gloucester. Police cordoned off the area in Midland Road as the man dismantled a chimney and hurled bricks at officers and passers-by. Residents had to be moved from nearby houses for their own safety as the situation became increasingly dangerous. But, to their amazement, police later used a cherry-picker to send a Kentucky Fried Chicken takeaway to the man. He was first given a pack of cigarettes and a can of Pepsi, but the drink was refused and a two-litre bottle was demanded instead. Minutes later, he tucked into a family-sized KFC meal. David Dalton, who runs a nearby guest house, told the Daily Mail: "Surely they should have been starving him out - not giving him food and drink so he can stay up there as long as he likes. "But no, they used the hydraulic platform to take a KFC meal, a two-litre bottle and a packet of fags." Gloucestershire Police said although he was being a "nuisance", they still had to "look after his well-being and human rights". The stand-off ended last night when specialist negotiators finally persuaded the man to give himself up as a large crowd of spectators cheered. He is now being questioned at a local police station. The rooftop drama took place in the same street where serial killer Fred West once lived with his girlfriend Rosemary Letts, who became his wife. West's step-daughter Charmaine was murdered and buried under the kitchen floor of their home on Midland Road in 1971. Her body lay undiscovered for over 20 years. Guest alex
Shoot a car thief, aye - righto! I'd have given him water and nowt else and waited for him to come down. Wouldn't have took long. Get some queer fuckers living in that street mind, don't you?

luckyluke 2
They should have just sat down and ate their KFC - "there's plenty to go down round here mate!" whilst wafting the smells upwards.
Guest alex
Cheeky bastard though refusing a can of Pepsi and demanding a 2 litre bottle of it! 145814 Trouble is, the police probably were bothered about the implications regarding his human rights. That is fucking bollocks obviously but you can just imagine some lawyer making that stupid argument. As soon as he refused the can of Pepsi. He shouldn't have been offered anything else. Sounds like the police handled it as well as they could under the circumstances though.
The Fish 11128
I don't understand why they didn't go up and get him? were they afraid he would jump?
Happy Face 29
If I don't commit a crime and climb on a roof, do the law have to bring me a KFC?
sweetleftpeg 0
I think the plan was that he would eventually die from cancer and fall off the roof.
Guest alex
I don't understand why they didn't go up and get him? were they afraid he would jump? 145834 Safety I would imagine. His, which has to be considered (whether you think that's right or not) and that of the police. Why should they risk potential death (remember Rod Hull? ) for some thief who isn't going anywhere? The Fish 11128
Was it his house? I'd have removed things of value from it and broken them up on the street until he came down.. Or just told him about a sale on at JJB sports 90% off everything... that would have got the pikey rat bastard shimmying down the rain pipe faster than Itsy Bitsy spider.
