All time Greatest XI?

I hope for your sake it isn't......

Who said anything about all time best? It's the players I'd like/enjoy having on my team. That's what it's about, man. Anyway I'm sure we'd beat your lot any day.

GK: Schmeichel - The best, simply unbeatable on his day

DR: Carlos Alberto - Inspirational captain, scorer of the best WC final goal ever

DL: Maldini - Multiple European Cup winner, a legend...

DC: Baresi - Unflappable, calm and assured.

DC: Beckenbauer - Amazing ability bringing the ball out of defence and range of passing

MR: Garrincha - The best player ever, just not media-friendly enough to be recognised as that.

MC: Maradona - Never has one man dragged his country single-handedly to world cup glory.

MC: Rijkaard - A general in every sense of the word, could spit a mean load as well :nufc:

ML: Cruyff - Sublime talent on the left, able to beat a man without him even knowing he was beat

FC: Pele - Two footed, quick, good in the air and impotent to boot.

FC: van Basten - simply put, the greatest striker of all time, career cruelly cut short by injury. Scores goals from areas no-one would dream of.

Why didn't Sima just start a Greatest Ever XI thread? He's obviously had that post ready for some time :nufc:

Btw, no George Best?

Didn't want to spoil the game like, but if I must be a starter, then get rid of Maldini, and I'll do a bit of overlapping with Laurent. Also, would need to make sure that Onopko is the left centre halve, to cover for my bombing up the wing and general shitness, while Albert and Barton can manage it themselves on the right.

Robbie Baggio and Bellamy can come on at half time for the centre forwards, Pagliuca also, so that every shot/cross he catches he palms onto the post and then catches the rebound ala 1994 World Cup. Dabz to come on for Onopko at half time as well. We'd end up playing for corners with Robert swinging it onto Nikos' head every time. Kaka' can stay on the bench, he's a bit shit.

Stay off the meths! Maradonna was hardly 'media friendly'.

In all honesty I haven't seen enough of him or a lot of the players you mention to make a proper judgement. The footage just doesn't exist.

I’ve picked my favourite, World Cup only, XI (the first tournament I can remember is 1982)

4-4-2:

GK: Jennings

RB: Thuram

CB: Kohler

CB: Baresi

LB: Lizarazu

RM: Platini

CM: Socrates

CM: Zico

LM: Maradona

CF: Baggio

CF: Ronaldo

I read in a book about Brazilian football that Garrincha was more loved in Brazil due to his flaws etc. whereas Pele was more revered, almost as a god.
