We havent been forced to follow on since 1988 when we played the Pakis.

Clarke has a rooted back and if he comes in i doubt it will be for long. Things are looking bad at the moment. Next test out - Gillespie, Clarke (if he isnt fit) and in Tait and Hodge.

Im going to bed, have fun you pommy bastards  ;)

That's you being the PC brigade already! ;)

We say Aussies for the Australians so why not Pakis for the Pakistanis? It's hardly derogatory?

I know that and I've got nowt against it.. Just that I know some people find it offensive.. Which is IMO stupid.

Yet another great days play!

I noticed they showed a stat that so far this series Giles has got out all of the top 8 Aussies batsmen and to think they thought he was shite before the series started!

If we can get Australia to follow on it will be an amazing effort as people just don't do that to them, but it won't be easy while Warne is still around.

Because when it's been used before it's been with heavily racist and offensive connotations.

Not being allowed to use racial slurs, it's political correctness gone mad.

Annnywayyy....

Great bowling performance by England, thankfully those Gilchrist drops didn't cost us. I hope the weather keeps up tomorrow.

Papa - we may not enforce the follow on even if we can - I wouldn't want to bat last on that pitch against Warne, when you see how much Ashley Giles is getting out of it.

Still though, the pyschological effect it would have on them would be brilliant.

I know what you mean and was thinking it myself, the balance of the positives of making them follow on against the risk of Warne ripping through us on that pitch.

I've noticed whenever Giles is doing well and getting wickets, obviously i'm delighted but then you tend to think, shit what will Warne do if Giles is causing this much touble!!!

Of course England would enforce the follow on. The pressure with Australia more than two hundred behind, coupled with the fact that we had just bowled them out for less than 245 would surely give England the confidence to go on and ask them to bat again.

Like I say, enforcing the follow on would be the thing to do for pyschological reasons, but for cricketing reasons (ie Warne) it would make sense to bat.

Just look at Australia in the 2nd test - following on from Lords', Ponting thought his team had a pyschological hold over England, so put them into bat on a good pitch, ignoring cricket sense, thinking we would crumble under the pressure. It backfired and we got 400 in the first day.

Wellsy, the Merlin machine is a bit of a Heath-Robinson device but it seems to work. It was designed by a Welsh engineer and can replicate Shane Warne. However, the ball is fired out of a hole so the batsman can't look for hand movement/position like he can with the real thing. I understand that the machine is also balding, fat, has two earrings, looks like a '80s pub DJ and is a sex pest.

Cheers appreciate it.

In regards to calling Pakistan, Pakis. I dont really care the world has gone mad. I call Bangladesh the Bangers is that just as bad? No, move on. Anyways just my view on that.

Vaughan would be silly to not enforce the follow on if we dont get past 245. Its all about keeping us under pressure.

In this country when the word has usually been used in such a context as 'you fucking dirty paki' it is quite understandable that Pakistanis would rather not be referred to in that way. It's also the fact that it is has been used as a catch-all umbrella term to insult anyone who looks Asian, which is also pretty bad.

Trust me, I went to a school with quite a large Asian contingent, 'paki' was not a word you said if you liked your face the way it was.

It will have to stop raining before there's any talk of an inspection. Next C4 update is in ten minutes.

I'm now thinking that should we bowl them out for less than 245 (unlikely) then we should enforce the follow on. We don't know how much more time will be lost, plus there will be moisture under the pitch which will make it a bit trickier to bat on, so hopefully we could get them out for a low score in their second innings.

May I just say a big thank you to Geraint Jones for missing that stumping. Well done! Dropped catches are one thing, but missing bog-standard stumpings against this lot are summit else.

Oh well, maybe Warne will get his maiden century now. It is the only thing missing from his record I think.

Extremely frustrating. The wicket keeper is basically the only professional/specialist fielder on the team. For me Jones makes to many errors for someone in that role. Regulation stumpings/catches/run-outs should be a given at this level.
