While Nicky Butt prepares himself for an uncomfortable return to Newcastle United following Birmingham City's fall from the Premiership, Amdy Faye is ready to leave the club after Portsmouth's successful survival fight.

Butt only joined Birmingham on a season's loan after a poor first year at St James's Park, which culminated in angry fans questioning the former England international's commitment after a dreadful performance in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to former club Manchester United last April.

Although there was the option of making the move a permanent one at the end of the season, the former Red Devil insisted he had a getout clause if the Blues were relegated.

As a result, the 30-year-old, who still has another year left on his £55,000-a-week United contract, has begun to prepare for the possibility he will have to return to Tyneside, especially as his form at St Andrew's has been just as inconsistent as it was when he was at St James's.

Butt's sizeable wage packet is definitely a problem for the Magpies and there is every chance the midfielder will decide to return to Newcastle, even if he is not part of the new manager's plans, rather than take a pay-cut to play regularly elsewhere.

That will be a big hindrance to the new team chief's recruitment plans in the summer as United chairman Freddie Shepherd is hoping to trim the club's wage bill if, as expected following the Bank Holiday weekend's results, the Magpies fail to qualify automatically for the Uefa Cup.

Newcastle have one of the highest wage bills in the Premiership and, while Alan Shearer's retirement will free up some funds, with the likes of Michael Owen, Kieron Dyer, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Scott Parker, Lee Bowyer and Emre also on hefty sums - not to mention the new lucrative deal to be negotiated with goalkeeper Shay Given - United could do without having to pay Butt as well.

Indeed, Butt's return may force Newcastle to part company with another central midfielder, with Bowyer, - on around £55,000 a week - the most likely casualty if Turkish international Emre honours his pledge to stay for a second season in English football.

Nevertheless, while Birmingham's drop from the top flight will inconvenience Newcastle's plans, the fact Portsmouth have preserved their place in the Premiership should mean United can off-load Amdy Faye.

Faye was signed by former manager Graeme Souness as a holding midfielder to cover for Butt. However, the Senegalese international has not looked good enough for a top-half of the Premiership side since his £2m switch from the South-Coast and has struggled to even make the bench when Newcastle are free of injuries.

Pompey, though, are still big fans of the tall 28-year-old and have already been in contact about the possibility of taking him back to Fratton Park.

United are unlikely to be in the market for any midfielders in the summer, with youngsters like Charles N'Zogbia, who is reportedly close to signing a new contract to ward off rumoured interest from Arsenal, and South Africa-born Matty Pattison emerging in recent weeks.

And with the versatile James Milner also set to return to Tyneside after successful season on loan at Aston Villa, Newcastle have enough strength in depth to focus of their recruitment policy on two new strikers, a left-back and a central defender.

Meanwhile, Shepherd will meet with Premier League officials this week to thrash out an agreement which will enable him to make Glenn Roeder the Newcastle manager.

But there is still speculation concerning the vacant manager's position and it could be Shepherd still looks to find someone to become manager with Roeder moving into a director of football role.

I'd rather have Butt than Faye like, I just hope the fans give him another chance as I think we're stuck with him for the time being.

Agree with Alex's sentiments here....

How many of the players who were turning out gash for Souness have been knocking some good performances out since we sacked him?

We all remember Butt playing in a Souness team - I think he needs at least the chance to prove it could be different.

Any right thinking fan will accept that we're stuck with him and we're paying him a lot of money, and will give him a chance. But there'll be a canny few (hopefully not a majority) blinded by hatred, and attributing sole responsibility for Cardiff to him, and he'll become an instant boo-boy. Alan Oliver will be stoking the flames and anyone that can't think for themself will be against Butt from the off.

I hope so but Ive got a feeling that Villa want him more then us so they'll end up getting him permanently

Aye, both of them should be out the door. Neither are first team standard and the money we are paying them each week could fund four back up players' wages.

I think Bowyer could do the business for us in all honesty.

When he was playing alongside Emre in the middle he was doing quite canny. Admittedly earlier on in the season he was a big bag of poo and looked to have the motivation of an adolescent sloth.

Can I just point out that that last comment is a bit rich coming from you, given your undying support/love for Souness.

I'd like us to get rid of Butt at almost any cost. Call it hatred if you like, but there should never be any way back for the ginger bastard. He's shit anyway. And that's my opinion, not Oliver's.

Oooooo Renton's in a radj! How's that comment a bit rich, you gimp? My "undying love and support" for Souness amounted for the most part to nothing more than me saying that he needed time to prove himself one way or the other.

If you're planning on booing a player that we're stuck with and that's picking up £55k a week then you're a moron. FACT. It's not my fault Alan Oliver is such a big influence on you!?

They would have to sell someone first.

I think it's rich you slagging off "fans who can't think for themselves" who are "against" Butt. I'm against him, as in I want him out of the club, but I never said I'd boo him.

Btw, if you were thinking for yourself when you supported Souness when it was obvious he was having a negative impact on the club (because lets be honest you did), then what does that say about your thought processes?

Sorry for the radj. Just found two of your posts today quite patronising, that's all.

Only two? My target's 100%.

Alan Oliver is Freddy Shepherd's mouthpiece, and you are Alan Oliver's. FACT!
