Dyer: I'm out of the World Cup

By Adam Marshall -  Created on 2 May 2006

Kieron Dyer has confirmed that he has no chance of playing in the World Cup finals with England.

The Newcastle United star has suffered another injury setback and his remote hopes of gaining a late inclusion in Sven Goran Eriksson's squad have been dashed.

The former Ipswich Town midfielder has featured in only 13 games this season, scoring once in the FA Cup win over Southampton, and his appearance in the win at Sunderland will be his last in the 2005/2006 campaign.

"Things could be better," he confessed to Sky Sports News. "I've had some more disappointing news, just of late, that I won't play any more games this season.

"Obviously, that means I'm out of the World Cup but you have to take the ups with the downs.

"I've had plenty of ups, I'm just going through a few downs at the moment.

"I've got a whole summer now to get my leg right and come back and, hopefully, have a successful season next year.

"I wanted to get right, first and foremost, to play for Newcastle. I've only featured in a handful of games and I think I owe it, not just to myself, but to everyone associated with the club to get myself right for that.

"The World Cup was secondary and, like I said, [i'm] just to miss out on finishing the season for Newcastle and the World Cup."

Not the most suprising news ever tbh.

Agree, it's hardly surprising. Considering there's been about 7 England international games played since he last played (Azerbaijan 30 March 2005). Next we'll be hearing Woodgate won't be making it either...  ;)

Don't tempt fate!!

If he'd been fit i think he had an excellent chance of going. Sven rates him highly and the fact is coming of the bench he can change a game against any defence and would have been a big asset.

He'd never start as he isn't in the same class as the likes of Gerrard, Lampard etc. but he'd have been great to have as a sub for England.

Carrick and Nolan are leagues above him tbh.

Carrick is an entirely different kind of player and role in the team so i doubt they'd have been in direct competition. Nolan like Dyer has no chance of starting but i know who Sven would prefer to have on the bench as an attacking option if the two and it would be Dyer with his pace and direct running, so i reckon Sven would have taken Dyer.

Agree with all of that. I think Carrick will be going anyway, regardless of whether Dyer was going or not.

And he should, one of him or Parker (before he got sick!) was always needed to provide a different option in midfield.

Which is extremely unfair, as Nolan has been awesome all season and Dyer has made 7 appearences this season.

However, I agree with you when you say Sven will probably take Dyer ahead of Nolan regardless.

Nolan has been class for two seasons now. He's clearly at the wrong club. Are Liverpool coming in for him again though?

Tbh i wouldn't comment on Nolans season as i have paid no attention to him whatsoever other than reading he's scored goals and played well of course.

I'm a fan of having the likes of Dyer and Wright-Phillips, players who aren't going to start but coming of the bench against tiring defences can rip them apart.

From what little i've seen i'd take Lennon for the same reason as he seems to have a hell of a lot of pace and would create problems for defences.

Probably if they don't go for Simao at Benfica.

Poor mans Steven Gerrard tbh. Why would they want him when they've got the real thing?
