Now Kewell is on form, they swap wings throughout the game. EDIT: "Gerrard is a very important player for us and played well. Walliver 0
IF we do play the 4-5-1 that someone suggested earlier, I think I'd prefer to see Lampard just behind the striker. He's a better scorer and it allows Gerrard to play his glorious through balls for Owen. For the strikers, I'd take: Owen Crouch Bent Harewood With these strikers, I reckon we can easily get through the group stages. If it's likely that Rooney will be fit for the rounds after that, take him. Drop Jenas.

However, I think Cole is more important to England than Gerrard now Rooney is out. Lampard is miles better than both though.

Is he not rated by people or is it because he comes from team that has just been promoted last season? Personally I'd like to see him at Newcastle lining up next to Owen next season, it would be Shearer and Sir Les all over again.
TheInspiration 1
Why take Ashton or Beattie? Neither have scored in weeks. As for the left-wing, Joe Ciole should really start, but they need cover, and that should be Stewart Downing. Eriksson only loves Richardson so much because he scored twice on his debut. Not because he's any good.
Walliver 0
For left midfield, why not Barry ? He's played there for donkeys for Villa and has the versatility to play in other positions (left back, centre back, central midfield) which is great to have on the bench. And he can (normally) take a decent penalty.
Holden McGroin 6783
Not a bad shout Walliver but just because he can play a variety of positions doesnt mean he is good enough. Think he just lacks a little to be an international footballer.

Downing, Etherington or whoever else goes to Germany will only be there as back up. These players aren't really proven internationals either. I reckon it makes sense, if someone's going along as cover, they should be able to cover more than one place. Sort of like an upgrade on Phil Neville. Shearergol 0
Alan Hansen's view:"Personally, I think the answer is to play Joe Cole just off Owen and move Gerrard to the left, giving him a remit to roam. Beckham can stay on the right, with Lampard in the middle alongside a holding player, maybe Carrick or Ledley King, if he's fit." LeazesMag 0
I think he should play Cole in Rooneys role now. Meaning he needs someone to play left. Its too late to experiment, so I would bring Downing in, to actually start [if Rooney doesn't go] Other strikers Defoe [nr 2 to Owen, direct replacment if needed], Crouch, Beattie or Ashton simply to change the system if there is a need to at some stage. If there is a doubt about the fitness of both Owen and Rooney lasting the tournament, he cannott afford to take both of them. There is no point in Eriksson sitting back in this competition if we fall behind or not changing anything if we aren't playing well. He has to go for this. He has a natural serie A type mentality in certain situations. The game against Brazil where we sat back 2-1 down against 10 men, took a forward off for a forward and had one shot in the last half hour....I'd have sacked him for that. The only positive I can take out of the Rooney situation is that we might see a player like Carrick or Ledley King (if fit) employed in the holding role. This would free up Lampard and Gerrard to play to their full potential.

I also see your point about protecting the defence, but if you play Carrick it means Gerrard or Lampard isn't in their best position either. The obvious conclusion is to play either Lampard or Gerrard, alongside Carrick. These decisions have to be made sometimes, if you want to take the cat and mouse tactical approach. It's a different shape midfield, so who would you choose between the two of them ? I know who I would prefer. Remember that if Joe Cole does play as a deep striker, you could also say he's a central atttacking midfield player, so Carrick, Lampard/Gerrard, Cole...Beckham on one side, Downing on the other, Owen up front seems a fairly well balanced midfield to me on its own merits, so I think if you want to play a "sitting" player, you must choose between Lampard and Gerrard. IMO Gerrard would be excellent in the Rooney-position just behind Owen. With Carrick and Lampard in the centre mid, Cole on the left and Beckham on the right, the midfield would be strong and have a very good balance.
