Holden McGroin 6793
On a whim, myself and a couple of buds just booked a weekend to Frankfurt in a couple of weeks...... The cost of a 2p return (+tax) kinda swayed us...... Anyone been? Havent got a clue what to expect, apart from Frankfurters. Wikipedia here I come. Isegrim 9910
Well,I bloody hate this place as there is a bit of rivalry to the part of Hessia where I come from. So my first advice would be to leave this place of f***ing southerners with their annoying accent. Apart from this, what are you really interested to know? The city has beautiful parts (nah, it's f***ing ugly) with a couple of historical buildings and some fine museums (if you are interested in cinematography, the "Deutsches Filmmuseum" is worth to visit; there are also a couple of art museums with famous paintings). The nightlife has a lot to offer, too. The "Batschkapp" is a famous place (with some clubs) where loads of bands are playing. Meenzer 15742
What he said. Also, if you want to get away from the skyscrapers and stuff, there are some nice towns within 30-60 minutes' striking distance on the commuter trains - and not only Mainz where I used to live. Heidelberg is a bit of a tourist "must", for example, and dead pretty too, especially since you should get the weather in your favour at this time of year - beers and ice-cream on one of the open-air squares then a hike up the hill to the old fortifications, can't be bad. There's a mountain railway thingy up to the top, but as English visitors you have to walk, it's the law.
Meenzer 15742
Are you flying into Hahn, by the way? That's one of Ryanair's cheekiest name games - the place is about a 90-minute bus ride from Frankfurt itself...

Meenzer 15742
Actually, you really can get to Luxembourg City from Hahn by bus in less than two hours, if you fancy a change of destination.

Meenzer 15742
The buses from Hahn to Frankfurt go every hour or so (on average), timed to tie in with flight arrivals, and apparently it's €12 each way, no discounts for return tickets. EDIT: Bah. Taxi? Not sure, but I wouldn't recommend it - mind, if there's a group of you then it mightn't work out much more than a bunch of bus tickets. Can't find any info on average fares, it's probably the sort of thing you'd negotiate with the taxi drivers at the airport. Will keep looking tho. Holden McGroin 6793
Ah well, at least (as you say) we'll get to see some of Germany! As its a short trip. I guess we just want to see a few sights and drink some German beer in the evening. Never been to Jormany so its another one to add to the list. Cheers Meenzer, there are 4 of us travelling by the way. Edited May 1, 2006 by Holden McGroin
Meenzer 15742
Frankfurt'll do you fine for that, and if you hop on a train to somewhere else for a day trip you'll get an even better impression of the place. There's cheap regional train travel for groups at weekends, just ask at the station about the Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket and you might even get a helpful answer in passable English and a smile. Though, knowing Deutsche Bahn employees, that might be stretching it... And you can always stock up on cans at Hahn airport for the bus ride if you want to hit the German brew as early as possible (and make the time just fly by )... They can't decide whether they're French, German, Belgian or Portuguese (the major immigrant population). And there isn't a great deal to do unless you've got a car and can hike up to the castles in the surrounding countryside. Stick with the Jorman pubs, I reckon.
