Jimbo 175
Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for this summer's World Cup after it was confirmed he fractured a metatarsal in his foot The England striker went down in agony in Manchester United's 3-0 loss to Chelsea under a challenge from Portuguese defender Paolo Ferreira. United released a short statement on Rooney on Saturday evening stating the striker had broken his 'fourth metatarsal on his right foot'. "He will be out for six weeks," continued the United statement on their official website. With this summer's World Cup in Germany just six weeks away it remains to be seen whether coach Sven Goran Eriksson will now gamble on the fitness of his star player. The Swede opted to use David Beckham while injured in the 2002 World Cup and the England captain was far from his best. However, with Rooney a major player in The Three Lions squad, Eriksson will give the former Everton man as much time as possible to play a part in this summer's showpiece event. Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Touch and go. Wouldn't happen if they wore proper boots instead of the glorified slippers favoured today. EDIT: I'm a pessimist but I don't don't think he will make it (its taken Owen four months to recover) and if he does he's not likely to be firing on all cylinders straigh away. Didn't beckham break one of his just before the last world cup? 129803[/snapback] yeap. Funny how almost everyone in England knows what it is now because of that. People can just say "Rooney, broken metatarsal" and everyone can gasp and recall the whole debacle of four years ago.

Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Good point made on MotD: when Rooney did his metatarsal in Portugal2004 he took three and a half months to recover. Think we've got to get on without him.

Kid Dynamite 7169
id take him if he could only hop on one leg. if we get through the group stage without him hed have an extra 2 weeks to get fit. i hope to god defoe gets his finger out and proves himself at this world cup. if wenger had given theo walcott a chance this season he could have been our very own messi! ewerk 31195
England's chances of any success in the WC are now gone. They will go on now to be hammered in their three group games and be an embarassment to the shirt (at least that is what the press would have you believe). Far be it for me to try and give England fans hope but there is more than one player in a team. England (fully fit) have a multitude of world class players, I personally rate a fully fit Owen, Cole and Lampard above Rooney and most logical people will not disagree with that. Rooney may be able to turn a game with one piece of genius but it is players such as those above who deliver every week in the PL. Owen and Cole provide good value to their country but Lampard has never looked comfortable, IMO that is solely down to the manager's selection of MFs. At the end of the day Rooney was only one player. It takes 11 to win a WC and from an Irish POV England still have as much chance of winnind it as they did at 12.45pm this afternoon. Gemmill 46024
Get him in the oxygen chamber for the next month and make sure he's eating something other than his normal diet of spaghetti hoops and cola bottles and he'll be able to start in the final. Gemmill 46024
Listening to people on the radio this morning trying to convince themselves it'll all be ok, and it's pathetic! We ruled Ledley King out pretty much straight away with his injury, but with Rooney, they're talking about "6 weeks to the first game, but more like 9 to the QF, so we could bring him back then, Geoff Hurst didn't play til the QFs etc etc." I tell you what, if Rooney wasn't under enough pressure to be England's saviour before the injury, it's just increased tenfold. If by some miracle he does make it back for the Quarter Finals (assuming England get there), the pressure on him to perform is going to be IMMENSE and totally unrealistic given he'll just be coming back from serious injury. Having said that, the way his story has gone so far, you wouldn't bet against him being able to turn it on.
Isegrim 9896
I think the big problem about including Rooney in the squad is that the player lists have to be submitted in two weeks time (May 15th). Selecting a player who might or might not return four weeks later will be a huge gamble.
Shearergol 0
Imagine France without Henry Imagine Brazil without Ronaldinho Rooney has no chance of playing at this world cup, which means I no longer think we can win it. Just look at the strikers we've got now: Owen (unfit, might not make it himself) Defoe (unproven at International level and not scoring enough in the EPL) Bent (extremely raw and unproven at this level) Crouch (no comment) Heskey (experienced but carrying weight, out of form, and out of favour) Vassell (always done well for England, but doubt he'll go) The most likely way to play now would be with one up front and play everything through Cole (our main threat now IMO)

He was rushed back and was a timid, lethargic husk of the player who'd beat Greece almost single-handed in the qualifiers.
