afternoonfix 0
Newcastle United - Management plans take shape EXCLUSIVE 25 Apr 2006 08:56 Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is ready to make Gerard Houllier the next Toon boss - with Glenn Roeder stepping up to director of football, writes Richard Cawley. Clubcall can reveal that Lyon manager Houllier is now the front-runner for the United hotseat. But claims that the former Liverpool boss will take on a director of football role are wide of the mark. That job will go to Roeder as reward for steering the club into European contention while in caretaker charge. The new management team will also please Shepherd. The Toon chairman lands his desired high-profile boss in the shape of Houllier but will also appease supporters who wanted Roeder to get the job, which has been vacant since Graeme Souness was sacked in February. Houllier will be the man calling the shots but Roeder, currently in charge of Newcastle's academy set-up, sees his power increased.
Gemmill 46086
It would be typical Shepherd to make the appointment the wrong way round. Clubcall aren't too reliable are they?

Clubcall aren't too reliable are they? 127139 So do you think Houllier should "go upstairs" in a DOF position? I personally think it will be unlikely he would and if he came he would want to manage the team. However i would expect Roeder to be first team coach, well he better be I do not want Phil fucking Thompson anywhere near our team.

Houllier must be getting on these days is he not? Old head advising younger up and coming manager. I'd be happy with what you suggest too, but if one of them was to be DofF, surely it would have to be Houllier.

Houllier might want to step back from the stress of the front-line, dodgy ticker iirc.

Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
houlliers last joint manager partnership hardly finished to well did it? 127690 The Houllier partnership was 'forced upon' the incumbent manager, Roy Evans (it was that or resign). If Houllier and Roeder are already friends, there is foundation for a good working relationship (as long as the roles are clearly defined).
