Leazes had a go at people like myself for supposedly backing Souness when (although I wanted rid) I realised he couldn't / wouldn't be sacked by Shepherd Football Manager-stylee at the beginning of the season as it wasn't feasible. Unbelievable

Leazes is locked in a dark room as we speak 'bashing the Shepherd'.

Typical childish response Alex

You don't understand the difference between a chairman and manager.

As snakehips and shak say, the chairman MUST back his manager regarding football related decisions. I realise some of you think Fred is team manager, those that do sadly, there is no hope for you.

The board runs the club financially and commercially, the TEAM manager is responsible for results. Once again, for about the 20th time, if you realise you have made an appointment that is not working, you can't go out and sack him championship manager style, the finance has to be worked out and you have to deal with it. Its ironic that some of you slag off newcastle online for having little kiddies posting nonsense and not understanding certain thinbs, but from what I can see there are more people on here that don't understand basic things like this than there is on Newcastle Online.

There is no point in you slagging Shepherd for backing his manager, then slagging him off for NOT backing his manager. Which people on this board do. You can't have it both ways, it just suggests to me you have an axe to grind, or quite simply are either whingers or just plain stupid.

The board have spent the clubs money to keep the club at the forefront of the top clubs, competing in europe, buying international footballers including Englands nr 1 striker, and filling the ground every week. Like it or not, this is not a duty, they don't have to do it, they do it because they have ambition and are speculating to try and be more successful. Other big city clubs don't do it, neither would we if they weren't so inclined, and the ground is full because people think its been worth going for those reasons. Simple as that. If you don't think so, don't bother going, its your choice. Then the club will be what it was before the Halls and Shepherd, and the vast majority of other big city clubs that we have risen above since 1992 and are still above, but I don't suppose you understand this.

To again play your game Leazes, answer the questions please.

What have been the achievements of Shepherd the chairman? What has he done that has improved the club since he took over in Dec 96?

The things you keep attributing to him were in place before he took over as chairman. Hes continued the good work, no doubt. To his credit I dare say he's had a positive impact financially with stuff like Goal! and The Match. Whether this is done for the good of the club or for himself, who knows, for a different discussion. He'd have to be an idiot to ruin the work that SJH did when he was chaiman but he's come very close with relegation being a real possibility under Souness.

Why does it make more commercial sense to sack the manager in February after he spent millions than before the season starts? These are points YOU'VE raised yourself many times

Why orchestrate a smear campaign against Bellamy that does nothing but lower his market value?

I dont disagree that Shepherds hands were tied and I cant criticise for actually selling Bellamy but are you going to say he couldnt have handled it better?

Does he not deserve some criticism for the inflated contracts some of our players are on? For example Dyer

Like I said I dont blame him for everything, I dont think he's the worst chairman out there. Unlike you though I dont have a blinkered stubborn view that the man is infallible. You will never criticise him apart from admitting he made a mistake in appointing Souness. For some reason now though it suits you to say he didnt make a mistake in not getting rid of him sooner.

I'd rather have a board and chairman that dont come across as second hand car dealers at best. I'd rather have a board and chairman that has a long term, well thought out plan rather than continuously making reactionary decisions like Shepherd. I'd rather have a board and chairman that have some intergrity and dont use the club to line their own pockets like Dougie and Freddie. It might not be possible but why should that stop me wanting it?

I agree with that but there is a big difference in spending money and backing your manager.

Robson wanted Miguel, we ended up with Carr, Souness wanted Boa Morte, we ended up with Luque it would seem. The signings of Kluivert, Butt and Luque as well as the sale of Woodgate seem to have originated in the chairman's office rather than the manager's.

For the record I'm not "Shepherd bashing", I believe we could do a lot worse.

Not being as good as the excellent SJH doesn't make you a failure or useless.

Simple fact is, he and the rest of the board have kept us competing with the other top clubs, played in europe, reached a couple of Cup Finals, bought big international footballers including Englands number 1 striker, appointing big name trophy winning managers and backed them completely, and fill the ground every game.

Whatever makes you think that moving up from 2nd to 1st is an automatic thing as of right ?

If you are unable to see this, or value the fact that they don't have to do this, [as numerous other big city clubs that were top of the pile and above us have shown and gone the same way ie downwards, though losing ambition,] they do it because they have ambition, then its your problem.

As I said, stop going if you aren't happy, 30000 others did for 3 decades when we had a shit board before. Don't complain when we are back in the Champions League though and you can't get in, and I will be watching with interest the comments made on here by the "we will never get anywhere while Shepherd is chairman" moaners .... like they did when we won in Rotterdam ....
