Bellamy goals haunt United Apr 11 2006

By Paul Gilder, The Journal

When it comes to evaluating the mistakes and miscalculations made by Graeme Souness during his ill-fated reign on Tyneside, it is generally agreed that investing £8.5m in the services of Jean-Alain Boumsong was the biggest by some margin.

Yet every goal scored by a rejuvenated Craig Bellamy in Blackburn colours strengthens the argument to suggest that selling the Welshman was the greatest error made by the hapless former Newcastle manager.

That Rovers paid £3.5m less for the talented striker than it cost the Magpies to recruit the blundering Boumsong provides a stark illustration of the incompetence of United's transfer dealings last year.

While the latter has proved himself ill-equipped for the demands of Premiership football - Boumsong could not even win a place on Newcastle's bench at Middlesbrough on Sunday - the former has restored his reputation as one of the British game's most potent attacking forces.

Bellamy's sensational strikes at Fratton Park at the weekend must have made Freddie Shepherd wince. As Alan Shearer's retirement approaches, United are crying out for world-class forward players; in Bellamy, they had one.

Souness attempted to justify the sale of the 26-year-old by insisting that he is not an accomplished goalscorer, that Kieron Dyer would find the target with more regularity and that the Magpies would be stronger without him. On all counts, he has been proved wrong.

In 27 appearances for Blackburn, Bellamy has scored 17 times - just one short of the combined totals of Shearer and Michael Owen this season - and his breathtaking opener at Portsmouth, so reminiscent of Owen's fabled World Cup goal against Argentina in 1998, suggests Souness never recognised the depth of his striking pedigree. That he could question Bellamy's capabilities while persisting with Shola Ameobi makes no sense.

Dyer, whose characteristic fitness problems have made him a peripheral figure since Bellamy's departure, has scored only once this season and his troubles show no sign of abating. It is clear the under-employed midfielder does not represent United's goal-scoring future.

As for Newcastle being stronger for Bellamy's absence, few could make a case for that. In the striker's three full seasons at St James's Park, United finished fourth, third and fifth in the Premiership table; having made him an outcast midway through last term, Souness steered his side to 14th, this year they will be fortunate to finish in the table's top half.

That Bellamy was a troubled character who caused his United managers considerable problems is beyond question, and it is impossible to justify some of his horrendous behaviour during his eventful time in the North-East.

Yet he was not the only one to step out of line and others - some of whom lack his natural talent - remain, having been given a great deal more chances to seek atonement.

With Boumsong set to depart St James's Park this summer, Newcastle supporters will soon be able to forget all about one of the worst pieces of transfer business in their club's history.

But with Bellamy expected to continue scoring Premiership goals for fun for years to come, forgetting the biggest mistake of all will not be so simple.

NEVER before will Sunderland fans have wanted to see their team suffer defeat as they will when they travel to Old Trafford on Friday.

Should the Black Cats fail to beat Manchester United this week, they will be relegated from the Premiership. But that is preferable to ensuring a stay of execution by engineering the unlikeliest of results at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Wearsiders have long been resigned to surrendering their top-flight status, the one thing they don't want is to be condemned to the drop by Newcastle.

Should the inevitable be delayed in the North-West, Easter Monday's Wear-Tyne derby could prove to be the darkest day in the club's 127-year history.

Relegation will be painful, Sunderland's final points total humiliating but to have their fate sealed by their bitterest rivals would be the worst facet of a calamitous season for Black Cats' fans. And that's why a routine defeat at Old Trafford will do nicely.

Great attempt Souness. I actually thought it was because you didn't like him...

Myself and UM were right though weren't we ? Hardly pissing my pants, crying in my beer more like. I'm usually right though.

Whereas Craig, and others, were spectacularly wrong

And won't admit it

I know its hard to argue.  I know I will be gunned down by this but I have enjoyed Bellers recently, he is well on form and buzzing.

Good Luck to him.

Bellamy was and is a hellish player but he had to much of an ego for newcastle, hes better at Blackburn cause hes the star and it revovles around him - at least recently.

Too Many ego clashes at newcastle under souness

Good point

BUT

It's upto the manager to sort that out, unfortunatley we had Souness. Look at Blackburn, you have Savage, Bellers, O'neill & Tugay. All have mouths on them, Hughes has got it sorted though. Hughes aint a kitten either!

If Bellamy was signed back by us who would be happy

And how much do you think he would cost

119928[/snapback]

Depends if the supposed buy-back clause in his contract really exists or not.
