As usual, I should have read the whole article and not just the first couple of lines!

Still, there are some really intelligent people who have commented at the bottom :D

It should only be called the Union Jack when flown from the back of a ship, when on land it should be called the Union Flag.

Tynemouth boating lake in Tynemouth Park. Just caus some fuck site produces pics of 'boating lake, Cullercoats' doesn't mean it's right! I mean, I could put a pic of Jonny Depp up and entitle it 'Snakehips' couldn't I, but it wouldn't be correct would it? Close, but not correct! :o

From Flags of the World

It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".

LOOK man !!!!

Historically it's Cullercoats Boating lake FACT

When HenryVIII beat the shit out of the priory at Tynemouth in 1539 he kept the site as a Royal Castle. As part of that plan he annexed the boating lake from Cullercoats so he could keep his supply of swans there in case he had visitors for tea. He also used it for ducking witches as it was less strenuous than hauling them all the way down to King Eddies Bay

The boating lake had belonged to Cullercoats since before the Saxons came (200-300ad-ish), Even the Vikings couldn't take the lake from the Cullercoatians, by the time they'd hauled their dragon-ships up the dunes and over the road onto the lake they were knackered and no match for Ye Olde Cullercoats Swan Pedaloes

I love the fact there's Welsh whining about Wales not being represented. Its because the Welsh were beaten and absorbed into England. It's only been in recent times that Wales has been officially recognised.
