Scottish Mag 3
Alan Curbishley is the latest candidate to be heavily backed for the vacant Newcastle managerial job. The Charlton Athletic boss is now second favourite to land the post behind Martin O'Neill, who came out on top in a Chronicle poll immediately after Graeme Souness was sacked. In the space of 24 hours, Curbishley (pictured right) has seen his odds cut from 20-1 to 4-1. This is a repeat of what happened a fortnight ago when George Graham's odds were similarly slashed. But the bottom line is that the bookies are as much in the dark as anyone else about United's next manager. Indeed Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said today: "The only people not laid for the Newcastle job are Roger de Courcy and Nookie Bear, and by the time Freddy Shepherd makes up his mind we'll probably have seen some money for them too. "We have not got a single loser in the book at the moment despite laying over a hundred grand, so we are happy as a pig in the proverbial. It would seem the world and his wife has heard a whisper, spoken to a Newcastle taxi driver or spotted a Premiership manager in the MetroCentre." Martin O'Neill 6-4, Alan Curbishley 4, Roberto Mancini 5, Mark Hughes 7, Quique Sanchez Flores 7, Ronald Koeman 10, Sam Allardyce 12, George Graham 14.
