ChezGiven 0
So successive waves of British football supoporters who have travelled abroad over the last 5 decades to watch their team in Europe have all been indulging in a thoroughly middle class pursuit, and no doubt look on it as much the same as their fortnight in Tuscany or Provence in the summer? And there is always the undedifying sight of course of the" ladies who lunch" having an off with the local riot police Spending £500-700 on a 2 day trip to Lisbon out of holiday season is quite a luxury. If you've got that level of disposable income you're either on a decent income or you are in a narrow demographic that has minimum outgoings. For the majority, such trips abroad are out of the question or at least very difficult. I was equating this to a weekend break to a European capital, not 2 weeks in the south of France. Since the 80s there has been an increase in the numbers who travel abroad due to massively rising living standards and cheaper travel. Travel did not happen on the same scale before that. Just because everyone drinks, has a laugh and talks with local accents doesn't change the nature of the activity, an expensive trip abroad to a cultured European capital. Successive waves of supporters have been indulging in this very non working class activity whether they like it or not. Eating baked cod in a posh restaurant doesn't become fish and chips in a greasy cafe just because its you and your mates I don't have figures but I'd be surprised if the numbers traveling to round of 16, quarter finals in the 60s and 70s are anything like today. I'd wager since the 80s onwards when there was a huge increase in wealth there was a shift. Clearly the finals have always attracted large amounts of traveling supporters but not sure about earlier rounds in the 60s and 70s. Did we take nearly 4000 to the quarters in 69? NJS 4375
Yes but going to Spain for a fortnight I would say is now a working class standard which would have been unthinkable in the 60s/70s. Increasing living standards has applied across the board - I'd say a middle class travel standard now would be a long haul holiday with quite a few mini-breaks. Christmas Tree 4711
Someone asked me to pop the racing on today as they had a horse running. So for a laugh a few of sitting there decided to quickly chuck a bet on. Probably years since Ive had a bet. £1 ew on a horse called Ubak romped home at 25-1 netting me £32 which will nicely pay for match day tomorrow. Well chuffed

I doubt anyone in the '69 quarters could have got there as cheap as say Paddocklad did for this tie, (£89 plane, £42 train IIRC?) obviously allowing for inflation. My pal got there for £250 on the thursday including his nights digs, so he basically spent no more than £400 and will leave him skint for the month. A few of the people who went to this game wont be having a traditional 'family' holiday either because they haven't got a family to take or couldn't afford a two week break but could maybe stretch to a couple of European trips? Bruges and Benfica being the two best attended by our travelling support for what, £800 all in for both if not cheaper?
Renton 21393
Mackem's clearly not middle class using Chez's criteria.

No, but we didn't have Ryanair then either....largely agree with what you say about income, but that is the difference, not class. Or are we saying the old middle class that would run a fuckin mile from a load of folk drinking beer and singing before a football match has disappeared, and the only people who can't afford a weekend or two abroad during the year are those too lazy to get a job in the first place?...its a tricky one, but there are a range of other factors too...possibly not many who went midweek had two or three teenage kids to bring up, in saying that it certainly didn't look like it and if the kids are in a single parent family being brought up by the mother then the state is likely to be taking the strain, leaving more disposable income for the old man for a jolly up. Not many of the Provence set are on tax credits as far as I know..btw the baked cod was lovely, but the other 3 had burger and chips, and 8 euros a head would indicate it wasn't exactly "posh"

Ayatollah Hermione 13837
Porn dialogue can be quite funny sometimes. Everyone involved knows the crack, knows its a scummy and dirty industry so anyone that makes a good joke about it is always welcome. Then you have the classics like "Cover your eyes, I'm gan to chuck me muck" and "fucking hell love, it's like a mouse's ear"

Very interesting if you like your North East social history. Ordered a couple of prints "Fish Sale" by Harry Wilson and "Dawn" by George Brownrigg. http://www.ashingtongroup.co.uk/artists1.html
