I dunno, think of what you could be like if she was doing it right.

It doesn't matter how good she is if you're trying to build the great wall of china with a couple of kilos of sand, cement and a handful of bricks.

I rewatched them a while back and there’s loads of subtle little bits I’d forgotten about. Like in that particular episode there was the lass who worked in the cafe. And she had this photo from when she was young where she’d won a beauty contest (Miss North West United Dairies or some such). And Leonard had borrowed the photo and every time she asks for it back, he says he can’t find it. Then the next time he’s being interviewed for the programme in his room it’s on display on his bedside cabinet

No… what was it?…

That Peter Kay Thing. it was presented in a documentary style narrated by Andrew Sachs. 6 episodes each featuring a local  main character from Bolton. Phoenix Nights was expanded from one episode featuring The Neptune club. It’s worth checking out if you liked Phoenix Nights. Leonard in the one in the picture is a part time preacher and is the subject of that episode for being recognised with an award for being Britain’s oldest paper boy.

Leonard, by Peter Kay. A pilot episode chronicaling the life of a mentally ill man in Bolton. Having had a mentally ill sister at the same time, I can vouch he got it spot on. Obviously he went with Phoenix Nights which had far more scope, but this episode is touchingly brilliant imo.

And aye, he's always telling shit jokes and says "are you having that?" (paraphrasing here mind).

I think that’s what he said. Are you having that? Or Are you having that one?

The ice cream man episode is unhinged, mind  He really was quite the comic actor before he dropped off big time. Then again, people who I would normally listen to tell me Car Share is actually good but I still haven’t brought myself to watch it

It was ok but I didn’t stick with it / watch them all. Also, iirc, the best stuff Peter Kay did (That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights imo) the writing team was him along with Neil Fitzmaurice and Dave Spikey. Talking of the subtle bits, in The Ice Cream Man Cometh one, he’s at some event selling his wares where there’s lots of people. And in the crowd you see Leonard. Or what you actually see is the massive cross with the wheel on the bottom amongst the crowd. The one Leonard took with him when he went preaching in town. But Leonard’s character hadn’t been introduced yet because his episode is later in the series.

I think I saw the DJ one, broadcasting from a car park of retail park? “Chorley FM…. coming in your ears”

Wasn’t aware there were more, they’ll likely be on All 4?

I’d forgotten about that but I think that was shown as a one-off pilot. Then there was a 6 part series off the back of that but a year or two later. It was really well observed in terms of shite, cheesy local radio with the DJ and his forced zanyness
